Is it a family drama? A pirate adventure? A magical fantasy? A coming of age tale? Are there bad guys that you root for? Good guys that you hate? Characters you care for? How about mysteries to solve? Gripping suspense? Foreshadowing of secrets yet to be revealed? Oh yes. The writing is outs...

There were things I liked and things I didn't like. I've definitely outgrown the writing style and audiobooks are the only way I can stomach Hobb's writing anymore.

36. SHIP OF MAGIC, BY ROBIN HOBB (Book 1 of The Liveship Traders, Book 4 of The Realm of the Elderlings)I was already a big fan of Robin Hobb (REALLY big fan, like, flag-waving shirt-wearing fan) so I wondered if I should read any of her books this year. After all, the whole point of this reading ch...

Ship of Magic is one of those books I'd hesitate to call "slow." The word simply doesn't do it justice. "Ponderous" might be a better word. Even "glacial," perhaps. It's not quite "soporific"--my irritation with the characters did a pretty good job at keeping me awake-so personally, I'd plump for...

I enjoyed this book quiet a bit (more at some times then others) and i think it was well written, but its not about to become one of my fave's (im sure much to Rosie's disappointment). The characters were well fleshed out and mostly enjoyable to read about but i felt like every time the POV changed i...

Robin Hobb's Liveship Traders trilogy is set in the same world as her earlier Farseer books, well south of that series' Six Duchies, in the port city of Bingtown. Bingtown is separated from its northern neighbor, the Chalced States, by the Rain River and the region known as "the Rain Wilds." Much ...

I suspect I'd have liked this book far better had I read rather then listened to it. The narrator's breathy, portentous style made me annoyed. This book is told in a shifting perspective style, and for my money, there are about 6 too many viewpoints. There are not very many people to actually like, ...

WOW what an amazing book! I'm going to try to describe the plot without giving away any spoilers. There are eight major sub-plots which cause for some confusion at first while trying to figure how they all fit together. This is not really a spoiler as almost all of is written or implied on the dust...

Ponderous prose and dislikable characters — except, perhaps, for the evil pirate captain who's only a caricature of an evil pirate and not nearly dislikable enough.

Final verdict: a great antidote to A Game of Thrones, with brilliant, complicated characters. My friend introduced to me to Ship of Magic:*The characters matter. The majority of characters in A Game of Thrones are AT BEST observers, and often not even good at that; all the characters (especially view...
