Grantchester #1 This collection of short story mysteries featuring Sidney Chambers was enjoyable although not anything special. Each of the mysteries was fairly basic due to its length, and I think that overall I'd prefer the TV series. I did quite like the reversal of roles where Amanda (a friend...
SusannaG - Confessions of a Crazy Cat Lady
Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death is the first volume in a historical mystery series, and became the inspiration for the TV series "Grantchester." Our setting: 1953-4 Britain. The Rev. Sidney Chambers is vicar at Grantchester, and is also a fellow at a Cambridge college (Grantchester is ve...

I kept seeing advertisements for a series on the BBC called Grantchester which is all about a vicar who is a part-time detective. After watching the first season, I knew that I needed to read the books that inspired the show. I waited until I made my way through all the ones that are currently out s...

I was surprised by how much I liked this book. Typically I’m one to dismiss out of hand books that revolve around priests, but I’m glad I stuck with this one. In spite of the main character, the plot of the book was for the most part not centered around Christianity or having a moral message for the...

Having watched and loved the show Grantchester, I decided I'd give the books the show is based on a go. And the book was enjoyable, but nowhere near as enjoyable as the show. The show adds a wonderful depth of character to Sidney that the book just does not employ. Though, I have to admit that I l...

I would be lying if I said that I enjoyed this book more than I enjoyed watching the first season of Grantchester. Don't take me wrong, I enjoyed this book and its six short stories (some better than the others), but still I liked the TV-show better. Why? Hmmm let's see Sidney Chambers, Vicar played...

Enjoyed this series of short stories about a vicar who gets caught up in some detecting, almost as part of his role as vicar. I saw the first story on TV when it was on and sadly missed the rest of the series.

A nice enough collection of short stories about the fictional crimes solved by Revd Sidney Chambers during the 1950s, but nothing seriously good to write home about. I think I started off enjoying it but, as I went through the different scenarios, they became very similar and I became rather annoyed...

Written as a series of 6 novelettes, it was reminiscent to me of the original release the Sherlock Holmes Mysteries in the end of the 19th century. While the stories were all seperate, they maintainted an interconnectedness focused on the two main characters. The handsome, bachelor, Vicar Sidney Cha...
