The story opens with Lady Julia Grey in Italy with her brothers. Her father sends a summons for them all to attend Bellmont Abbey for Christmas and with some encouragment to her brothers they do, with an Italian escort who is interested in Julia. Her family are eccentric but they enjoy each others...
Too much, not enough. This is where I start to wonder if maybe Lady Julia is not perhaps a bit annoying, and I decide that there are entirely too many pets, relatives, red herrings, stupid bumbles, and not enough witty banter and necking between solving crimes.
I do enjoy Lady Julia and Brisbane... and the eccentric March family. While the "mystery" isn't what I'd call a true mystery, and the story seems to linger while Lady Julia stumbles and blunders, vacillating between being proud and apologetic about her actions, there is something about these stories...
Deanna Raybourn writes a solid mystery story. I enjoyed that aspect of the book quite a bit, as well as continued glimpses of some of her colourful friends and family. However, I was left with a feeling of disquiet with respect to Julia and Nicholas. There is a lot of potential there for a friend...
I actually liked this one a lot better than the first! Both the mystery and Lady Julia’s relationships with the various characters seemed much more enjoyable somehow. I’m anxious to read the third. [Sept. 2010]
