I've decided once I've gotten 50% into a book and I still don't like it there's nothing to be had for it, so thus my new shelf. I get it, it's meant for a younger audience than me (but so is most of what I read) but I found it pretty lacking even considering I read it to broaden my SFF picks to be m...

Oh my God.OH MY GODWHAT THE HELLThat wasI loved this book. Period. It was such a fascinating read.I am Chinese myself, and I thoroughly enjoy Chinese dramas, btw, so whenever I read a Chinese Historical fiction I tend to recognize things as I read along. It makes me feel like I'm watching another TV...

I found this novel to be extremely plot driven and lacking the character development that is necessary to make a story truly excellent. Silver Phoenix does deliver on interesting mythology that I was not familiar with prior to reading the novel and it does borrow liberally from the rich Chinese lege...

Another book that has to go unfinished (after 108 pages). In the beginning I had a good feeling. Although the characters behaved a little anachronistically, which is completely alright for a fantasy novel set in an alternative version of an existing region, I liked them and I enjoyed the lush and exo...

The beginning of this book was really, really excellent, but I felt like it started to turn episodic and there was a lack of character development once the "plot" made an appearance. Would probably be a great read for MG readers, but I don't care enough to continue.Read the review on Truth Beauty Fr...

Ai Ling comes from a pretty traditional family and is on her way to becoming betrothed. However, it seems like the old rumors of her father's exile from the Palace haven't died, and her family is unable to find her a match. Her father is then summoned back to the Palace but, when he doesn't return a...

My first exposure to Cindy Pon's Silver Phoenix: Beyond the Kingdom of Xia was via blogs: The publisher had changed the cover of her novel, taking the obviously Asian-inspired, gorgeous cover art and replacing it with a more trendy and generic black cover.I'm still sort of angry on the behalf of all...

I really enjoyed reading the Chinese-mythology influenced fantasy adventures of the 17 year old heroine. The demons are overcome a little too easily, perhaps, but she still displays plenty of cunning and fight. I look forward to reading more in the series. (I don't much like destined love, but th...

This novel has good things and not so good things. Quite a strong first novel but with the flaws that comes with it.One of the really, really good thing: the world building is wonderful. I loved Xia, I loved the Immortals lands, the landscapes. I especially loved that both Ai Ling and Chen Yong knew...

I expected to enjoy this book more than I did, given the setting and the premise of the story. The writing is solid, and things are fairly well paced. All these things combine to make, well, an average story instead of a gripping one.
