"Skim" is Kimberly Keiko Cameron, a not-slim, would-be Wiccan goth who goes to a private girls' school in the early '90s. When her classmate Katie Matthews is dumped by her boyfriend, who then kills himself — possibly because he's (maybe) gay — the entire school goes into mourning overdrive. It's a weird time to fall in love, but that's what happens to Skim when she starts meeting secretly with her neo-hippie English teacher, Ms. Archer. But then Ms. Archer abruptly leaves the school, and Skim has to cope with her confusion and isolation while her best friend, Lisa, tries to pull her into "real" life by setting up a hilarious double-date for the school's semi formal. Suicide, depression, love, homosexuality, crushes, cliques of popular, manipulative peers — the whole gamut of teen life is explored in this poignant glimpse into the heartache of being 16.

3.0 Skim (Tomaki)
It's unlikely I ever would have picked up a graphic novel, particularly a young adult one, had it not appeared on my "CBC 100 novels that make you proud to be Canadian" list. The experience of reading this was not unpleasurable, but it was enough to confirm for me that I don't really like this form ...

2.0 Drama llama: The epic conclusion
Yes, I've reached the end of my journey with Jillian Tamaki. I just finished her first work with her cousin Mariko entitled Skim. One thing is for certain...Tamaki has the corner market on teenage angst. (As you can probably tell, I'm over the angst.) The story follows a girl named Kim who is your t...

3.0 Skim by Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki
I like most stories with mixed protagonists, so Skim delivered there. However, the rest of the story didn't capture me. I did like watching Katie and Kim's relationship develop, but there was so little of it in the book. I think if I were in high school or under duress I would have enjoyed the sto...

4.5 Skim: Or The sting of unrequited love when you're 16
This book was like a time capsule for me. I could relate to the main character, Skim, so much that it was almost like thumbing through an old journal of my own. Skim is a Wiccan goth queer outcast in high school, in the early 90s, which pretty much sums up my own adolescence. I can honestly say I've...

3.5 Skim by Jillian and Mariko Tamaki
I borrowed Skim after reading a friend's review. This graphic novel uses the life of a 16 year old overweight Wiccan-in-training girl to explore various aspects of being a teenager. The story of Skim - also the girls nickname - is at a turning point. Throughout the book she experiences some situation...
