Snow White and Rose Red live on the edge of the forest that conceals the elusive border of Faerie. They know enough about Faerie lands and mortal magic to be concerned when they find two human sorcerers setting spells near the border. And when the kindly, intelligent black bear wanders into their cottage some months later, they realize the connection between his plight and the sorcery they saw in the forest. Mrs. Arden is a wise woman, who has taught her daughters some of her healing arts. Sometimes the girls have to cro...

After Tender Morsels, I thought I’d try a different re-telling. And hey! I like Patricia Wrede. It was okay. As with Before Midnight, I enjoyed the book but wasn’t blown away. Although the darkness of Tender Morsels makes me hesitant to re-read it, it’s far more memorable. [Jan. 2010]

Good fairytale retelling of a little known Grimm Brother's story. For a more inventive (and modern) retelling, check out Regina Doman's Shadow of the Bear: Snow White and Rose Red Retold.
