Definitely not the best Star Trek novel, and certainly not up to the standards set by James Blish in his series of adaptations, this was the second "official" Trek original novel. While there were some interesting plot items, it was really just a Spock-less tale with one of the throwaway characters ...
A highly surprising ending makes this book am excellent addition to any library. The idea behind dops is ingenious and a curious future should the idea prove a reality.
[These notes were made in 1983:]. My reading today went from the sublime [Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd:] to the mildly ridiculous. The premise of this one is mind-links gone awry - mind-links with aliens who don't know about it, which seems to me to be a flagrant violation of the Prime Direct...
