Word of warning. I’m going to discourse both on the book and on the Verhoeven’s movie. He didn't include them as "grunts" probably because the training was sufficiently hard that most wouldn't have made it. If you read the description of the training it wasn't just 12 weeks square-bashing, it read...
Philosophical Musings of a Book Nerd
Sometimes it is really hard to drag up out of one's deep memory the names of all the books that I have read. Granted, I could list all of the Little Golden Books that I read as a child, but somehow I think that defeats the purpose of listing all the books that one has read on Booklikes (though I jus...

Great book but nothing like the movie. If you've seen the movie but not read the book, you owe to yourself to do so.

Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein My rating: 5 of 5 stars This is my very first Robert A. Heinlein book. I've heard of his books for so many years, and yet have been repelled from reading. I think the reason is that I was tucking these type of books away when I'm so sick of what is being relea...

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I had a hard time putting it down and sped through it. For a military adventure set during a war it had a surprisingly small amount of action, though it added to the realism. All in all I would recommend this book to just about anyone.

Well I have been yelled at for years that if I am a true science fiction fan I have to read Heinlen. I don't subscribe to that philosophy myself though. I read a lot of different authors and genres and sometimes one person's wheat is another person's chaff. Starship Troopers was originally published...

I started reading sci-fi quite intensively in the 80s (as if my life depended on it) and if you had asked me at the time who my favorite of the Big Three of Science Fiction is I would have said Robert A. Heinlein. He was, I thought, the funniest, the liveliest, the least dry, and basically the most ...

An entertaining read, but it loses momentum in parts.

I found parts of this difficult to understand (and digest), and while it's a fun adventure read, some of the societal bits seem just odd. Sadly, the book may have been ruined for me forever by one of the worst sci-fi movies ever made (one critic called it "Melrose Space").
