Of all the ways vampires are depicted in books and movies, this classic Dracula is how I prefer them. Awful, evil, coldly predatory, both compelling and repelling their victims. The story itself is wonderfully moody and atmospheric and the characters – even the minor characters – are truly a lot of ...

This book was a suggested title for the "Star-Crossed Lovers" theme of week one of the Albany Public Library Summer Reading Challenge. I would probably not have chosen this book of my own volition. Will Traynor was once a high-powered business guy based in London, making stacks of money buying and...

Once again, this was a good full cast audiobook experience, although there are portions that drag. And although I like how competent Mina is, it's annoying to see her patronized as well. I finished this a while ago but was lazy about posting anything. I read it for the Gothic square for the 2018 H...

Excellent historical mystery. This is the first in a recurring character series, and the first I’ve read of this author. An attorney in Tudor England, working for Thomas Cromwell, seeks to solve the murder of another of Cromwell’s agents in a monastery. Bonus mystery thrown in, and lots of interesti...

I probably wouldn't have picked up A Darker Shade of Magic if not for it's sequel. I didn't read them out of order and it's be safe to expect the review for A Gathering of Shadows to come out next week, but it was this second title that grasped my attention. I'm not a big fantasy fan and tend to avo...

Narrators: Alan Cumming, Tim Curry, & full cast I’m done! I’m not sure what to say about it though. I am glad to have read, or listened to, this classic, but I think I’ll need to reread it in print at some point. The performances of the cast were quite good, although I’m not sure how well this boo...

The way this book is set up--being told through a series of diary/journal entries, letters, etc.,--really lends itself to a multiple narrator format. Everyone involved gave an amazing performance, especially Alan Cumming as Dr. John Seward, and Katy Kellgren as Mina Murray/Harker.

I wanted to give the clueless, self-absorbed "heroine" a slap upside the head throughout most of this book. How does she think that making decisions for someone is going to help a person whose chief issue is having lost all control over his own life? Still, it was an entertaining read, and the aud...

In The Woods is an excellent story. (This is a review for the audible book): The book has an interesting plot and even better characters. The relationships were fleshed out well. This story has unique psychological twists -- A mystery and a previous mystery-- secrets were kept until the protagonist ...
