Lord Knight began by saying, "I need your help, Robbre. No doubt you are aware of my vast holdings in the Kings Trust Company (It was a French version of the famous English insurance company Lloyds of London that would insure anything for anyone for millions and billions of dollars). My friends in the home office have shared some very disturbing news with me. The company was forced to pay on several bogus claims. It has nearly ruined us."
"How can I help, father?" the sixteen-year old, a recent finishing school graduate, asked with growing curiosity.
The mature father smiled with pride as he said, "You have your mother's intuition and my acumen for good business, but you have a special gift. I know that you could turn the tables on those blighters. The soulless wretches claim that they are robbed of their jewels just so they can get the insurance money. The bloody stupid company wrote them checks without thoroughly investigating the crimes.
I want those buggers to be brought to justice, but not by the law of the land. There are too many good people involved that could be destroyed if the criminals sought vengeance once they were caught. What I desire for you to do is find the miscreants, recover the supposedly stolen items and then bring the jewels to me. I will take the pleasure of rubbing their noses in the truth in the light of day. If I am right, they will gladly pay back the insurance money plus a finder's fee just to keep their names out of the Times and their backsides out of the pokey."
Robbre asked, "Don’t you think that I am a tad young for this important assignment. Surely you and your friends must know of other more experienced men who could do the job. What if I get caught and they guess that you sent me?"
Lord Knight said, "It is your youthful looks that I am counting on to blind the world to the truth. You must put away your love of books to embrace the true mysteries of life. I will secretly bankroll your venture, but they will think that you are a prodigal playboy bent on squandering his inheritance. Your special talents will see you through."
Lady Ariane Knight rushed in as she said, "Robbre dear. The whole thing was my brilliant idea. You need a break from the tedium of home and your studies. This is a golden opportunity for you to spread your wings and prove that you can fly.
You are a man now. You will charm these illicit women into revealing where they hid the jewels that were supposedly robbed from them. When they are in your hands or in your arms, you will be able to read their most secret and intimate thoughts. Your father and I trust that you will not soil yourself, your good reputation, or the family name."
Robbre smiled and hugged them both before he said, "I will do it for you. I pray that I will live up to your grand expectations. We shall see if everything that you have taught me is enough to face the world."
Lord Knight laughed and then he said, "You are more than a match for the slow witted criminals of this world. It is the crafty foxes of the fair sex that you must beware of. They will skin you alive, if you let them."
Lady Ariane placed her hand on her son's chest before she said, "You must always think with your heart. That is where your strength, courage, and wisdom are stored. If you think with your head, you will be too slow. You will only be able to react to whatever life throws at you. If you think with your manhood, you will surely die. A man can live for years without a soul, but he is full of bitterness and vile thoughts. Trust in your heart and let the peace that comes from it guide you in all your decisions."
"I'll do it!" he announced as he sprang into her open arms.
