I work as a writer, editor and translator at the intersections of philosophy and critical theory, visual culture, design studies, poetics, ecology, and theology. My works are essentially genealogical, extending the history of thought back in time to the Paleolithic imagination and forward into our present design culture, but, like Nietzsche, Bataille, and Foucault, I am primarily interested in the realm of affective experience that escapes recuperation in discursive knowledge. Writing at the margins of many academic fields, I work in spaces excluded or marginalized by traditional scholarly disciplines, while also striving to bring the insights offered by scholarly rigor to a wider audience. My educational background includes degrees in philosophy, comparative religious studies, and comparative literature. As an educator, I’ve taught courses in cultural history, philosophy, design, film and visual culture, Holocaust Studies and other fields. I am currently President of the Design Studies Forum, a College Art Association Affiliated Society, dedicated to the promotion of the academic study of the history, theory and practice of design. I teach in the MFA Design program at the California College of the Arts.
