Suhas Tambe (b. 1950) met with the late S. N. Tavaria, a Yoga master, who introduced him to Pātañjali's Yoga-Sūtra, in 1993. For the last ten years, Suhas has studied Tavariaji's unpublished writings, researched extensively in order to understand many unexplained concepts, painstakingly avoided any apparently religious connotations, and constructed a contemporary presentation for today's readers. Suhas has been a devout practitioner of these Yoga exercises himself since 1993. Prior to this transformation, however, for most of his early life he remained spiritually challenged making him believe now that if he could seek and walk on the yogīk path anybody could! His spiritual journey started with curiosity; some interest. Friends and well-wishers made many suggestions for exploring the new spirituality with a sigh of relief, "thank god he is finally there!" He doesn't remember when curiosity turned into seeking, and did not know for quite some time what exactly was he seeking. In āśrams there was alluring peace but also annoying scent of a 'business of spirituality.' Attempts to meet some enlightened people didn't succeed as they appeared to keep a guarded distance. Visits to deities drew into a whirlpool of incensed devotees and the manipulative priests. He did learn some rituals and tried to read a few books. Though seeking was alive in the guts, any spiritual journey itself looked hazy because he could connect with none of these things. Then he met his guru who brought a fresh breeze into the spiritual quest with an awesome smile, easy accessibility and very gentle conversations about deep philosophy. It brought spiritual aspects right into the 'normal' life and seamlessly blended the two. His guru not only introduced him to Sage Pātañjali's Yoga-Sūtra but also gave him a wonderful gift - the real sequence of the sūtras, available nowhere else. Since then Yoga is his life. Perhaps the initial encounter with those spiritual celebrities, the rituals and the paraphernalia was only an invitation. But once there, that showcase did not help him any further in the spiritual journey. He learnt that the quest and the spiritual realization have to anchor in your own self and not scattered all around. Nothing outside, howsoever authoritative, is of any use if you cannot absorb it as a part of your own transformation. Over the years, this process of transformation has also continuously morphed his goals and expanded horizons to make the once completely alien goal of enlightenment real; in fact, now the only one. He has written several plays in Marathi (a regional language in India) and has keen interest in experimental theatre, a passion he still invests in writing and helping the theatre enthusiasts. He also plays Indian drums, writes poetry and is an avid reader of anything good.Today, he splits his time between practicing Yoga and earning a living from a traditional career in Finance and Information Technology. Now an 'empty nester' he lives in Chicago with his wife Vibha, an Attorney.
