Sybil: a name that resonates with legions of obsessed fans who followed the nonfiction blockbuster from 1973. The book rocketed multiple personality disorder into public consciousness and played a major role in having the diagnosis added to the psychiatric bible, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. But what do we really know about how Sybil came to be? In her news-breaking book Sybil Exposed, journalist Debbie Nathan gives proof that the allegedly true story outlined in the megabestseller was largely fabricated. The actual identity of Sybil (Shirley Mason) has been available for some years, as has the idea that the book might have been exaggerated. But Nathan reveals the trio of women behind the legend: the willing patient, her ambitious shrink, and the imaginative journalist who spun their story into bestseller gold. Sybil Exposed draws from an enormous trail of papers, records, photos, and tapes to unearth the lives and passions of these three women whose story exploded into an epic movement with consequences beyond their wildest dreams. Set across the twentieth century and rooted in a time when few professional roles were available to women, this is a story of corrosive sexism, bold but unchecked ambition, runaway greed, utter human vulnerability, duplicity and shared delusion, shaky theories of psychoanalysis exuberantly and drastically practiced, and how one modest young woman’s life turned psychiatry on its head and radically changed the course of therapy—and our culture, as well.

3.0 Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case
A very interesting look at how the Sybil story came about. The book read like a fiction story, but seemed to be well research and informative. It is amazing to believe that this one story changed the field of psychiatry so drastically. Definitely worth trying it out.

3.0 Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case
The story of Sybil is one I've known all my life. My mother is obsessed with her story. She read the book and has seen the movie dozens of times so it's always been there for me. This book took everything I thought I knew and flipped it on its head. I'm not sure what to believe. Obviously, no matter...

IT WAS ALL A LIE......or was it?A few decades back, there was a movie called Sybil which was sort of a buzz movie. Before that, the story was a book. I've never read the original book, but I have seen the movie a few times. Basically, the book was about this woman (whose named had been changed) and ...

In the course of reading this book, I went back and looked at summaries for the original Sybil: The Classic True Story of a Woman Possessed by Sixteen Personalities. I was in high school when I read the book but looking back from 2012 and my own age and experiences, I'm quite surprised anyone still ...

This quote sums the entire horrifying book to me:Almost four years had passed since Shirley [the real Sybil] first walked into Connie's [Dr. Wilbur] office as an upbeat graduate student with nagging but bearable emotional problems. Now, after hundreds of hours of therapy and countless pills, shots, ...
