I'm not sure why this book comes up with the wrong author -- it's T.A. Pratt, the altered name to Tim Pratt (he was told that readers wouldn't like his female protagonist if they knew the author was male). At any rate, maybe I was just having a bad reading week or two since basically everything I ...
Marla Mason is the guardian of the city of Felport and is under attack from an unknown enemy and the clues are leading to dead people. She has to find out who it is before she becomes another body, and also there's a spell trying to kill her and she's not sure if both are related. Marla is a stron...
As with most anthologies, there were some stories I enjoyed a great deal, some I couldn't really stomach, and most of the rest fell somewhere in between.I'd read stuff by many of the featured authors but some of the ones I didn't know intrigued me so I have made a note to look into the works of Elle...
Liked:* Marla is a hard character to understand and I get why some people don't like her. She can be ruthless and even her friends sometimes find her difficult to get along with. Still, she is completely unique especially in the overcrowded urban fantasy shelves. Also, her ruthlessness and the dista...
I didn't like the characters and I hated the main character. I had absolutely no interest in or empathy for her. I started to like her sidekick but then more was revealed and he was a borderline sociopath. The story was somewhat unclear and surprisingly slow moving considering the reader is thrust i...
I didn't care for this one I'm afraid. I was in the mood for some magic- I'm a big fan of the Hollows series by Kim Harrison and the blurb makes this sound similar- but I got halfway through this book and had experienced precisely no magic, and hadn't been gripped by the characters or plot, so I sto...
I liked the first book in this series better than this one, but I still thought it was a good read. I liked that the action was in Marla's town, and got to meet some of the other sorcerers she deals with. Will read the next one.
While I did enjoy this story and it's characters the book seemed very slow. I know back story is needed to understand the characters and the plot but it seemed to take forever to get through that part. Now when the ball got rolling the story was pretty darn good. I love a story that makes me think "...
I just really like Marla's style. She is tough, powerful, no-nonsense, unabashedly pragmatic, and I really love reading about her. I would not want to work for her, but it's fun to read. There is a lot of suspense, danger, and very well drawn characters.
