Castle Hangnail
Castle Hangnail - Ursula Vernon

It was a marvelously dark and dour twilight at the castle.

-opening sentence

This book is so cute.

All the minions are waiting for their new owner to arrive. They are expecting an Evil Wizard, a Dark Sorceress, or maybe a Wicked Witch. But what they aren't expecting is a twelve-year-old girl. Molly is a Wicked Witch; after all, she is a twin and definitely the bad one. (Her sister loves pink and glitter.) But she is only twelve and the castle guardian has his doubts about her. And what if the Board doesn't accept her as the new master of the castle?

Molly is a great character. She is a wicked witch in the nicest possible way. She is a strong, brave girl who doesn't fully believe in herself but doesn't give up either. The minions are delightful. Pins is a fabric stuffed doll who loves to sew and Fish (a neurotic goldfish) is his best friend. Cook is a minotaur who hates any words that begin with the letter "Q", and Edward is a magical suit of armor. And that's just a few of them.

The story is cute, even though parts of it are a bit predictable. Molly is a great role model for standing up for the little guy. And she can talk to animals and turn some of them into dragon hybrids (at least for a minute or so). What's not to like??

This will be a favorite among readers in grades 3-5, and maybe older.

I'm using this book for the Free Space on my Bingo card. :)

Daredevil vol. 18: Cruel and Unusual by Brubaker and Lark
Daredevil, Vol. 18: Cruel and Unusual - Ed Brubaker,Greg Rucka,Michael Lark,Mike Perkins

Okay, you know what? We're gonna talk about what I feel is the most insidious trope involving female characters in writing, and specifically in genre writing. Is it  the act of "fridging," the death of a female character in order to torment and further develop the character of their male love interest? Well, that's pretty close, and something that Daredevil in particular is rife with. But that's a trope that's called out, often--so often, as a matter of fact, that it's amazing that writers still fall back on it.

No, I'm talking about the Mary Sue. Oh, you say, but Mary Sues are talked about all the time! Yeah, I'm not talking about female-written and/or created power fantasies. I'm talking about the male created Mary Sue, the sexual fantasy of their perfect woman.

And this brings me to Dakota North in this run of the comic. Yeah, her name is Dakota North. And you know what else? She's a former world famous runway supermodel turned tough talking New York P.I. who perfectly matches Matt's wit, and calls him out on his shit in the most awesome way ever!

And I just facepalmed writing that, let alone reading it in the comic. It's obnoxious, and as someone who always tries to see the absolute best in every female character, it's possibly the most alienating thing a writer can do. Because it's not for me. At all.

And it makes me feel worse to see Milla, a character who started out as independent and funny, sweet, interesting, and a match for Matt in the Bendis run, so obviously demeaned and discarded because the writer was in no way interested in sexually. And there's a whiff of ableism to the whole thing, to the entire Brubaker run, frankly, to make the blind woman without the superpowers helpless and whimpering, and then destroy her mentally because Brubaker just doesn't want her around.

Also, as awesome as it should have been to see Matt called out on his selfish behavior towards Milla, the characters all do it in a way that doesn't at all defend or benefit Milla, and that most contemptible of phrases is uttered, by your friend and mine Dakota, "Get over it."

Yeah, Matt needs to get over himself a little. But the writing is too weak to do it in any sort of satisfying way. I'm rereading Waid's run at the moment, and there's one moment in it where Matt seems more genuinely affected by Milla's situation than he ever does in Brubaker's entire run, during the storyline itself.

Liking this more right now
Gwenpool, The Unbelievable (2016-) #18 - Christopher Hastings,Gurihiru

The meta issue is back in the forefront and it looks like it might be taken to another level.   I'm hoping it is.

It's a bunch of fun, especially with Gwen's brother and family involved now, and this was a lot of fun with a lot of guest appearances and references.   Let's see where this goes now...

It Ain't So Awful Falafel
It Ain't So Awful, Falafel - Firoozeh Dumas

To all the kids who don't belong, for whatever reason.

This one's for you.

- Dedication

My dad says that the dogs and cats in America are luckier than most people in the world.

- page 34

My dad always says that kindness is our religion and if we treat everybody the way we would like to be treated, the world would be a better place.

- page 40

... only bookworms get excited over other bookworms

- page 69

"Who would ever have thought that a person could be so powerful, then so completely powerless, all in the same lifetime?"

- page 219 (referring to the downfall of the shah)

... even though we belong to three different religions. We are alike in so many more ways than we are different.

- page 299

It was only when I stopped pretending to be someone else that I found my real friends.

- page 360

This was a good read. Zomorod (who changes her name to Cindy) is from Iran. Her father is an engineer who works with American companies building oil refineries in Iran, so they moved back and forth a couple of times.  Now she is starting junior high (which nowadays is called middle school) and doesn't know anyone. She wants to fit in, but she focuses on how different she is from all the other kids. The first friend she makes (in the summer before school) decides she doesn't want to be friends when school starts. Poor "Cindy" is lost and worried and tired of having to explain to everyone where Iran is and how to pronounce her last name.

Cindy finds friends and seems to be settling in and basically happy. Then Iran has a revolution, the shah is kicked out of the country, and Ayatollah Khomeini takes over. On November 4, 1979, Iranian students, angry that President Carter allowed the shah to come to the United States, take a group of Americans hostage. This changes Cindy's family's life and her father loses his job.

I was in junior high during the Iran Hostage Crisis. I remember feeling vaguely angry at the hostage takers and worried about the hostages. My mom wasn't huge on watching the news with us or anything, but I knew what was happening (at least generally).

It was interesting reading this story told from the point of view of an Iranian girl in America at the time. It was so hard for Cindy's family, and many Americans were so hostile towards Iranians, even though those living in America weren't responsible for the situation and didn't necessarily approve of it. Cindy and her parents were so appalled that a religious leader could be responsible for such behavior. But that didn't save them from hate and discrimination.

This is a nominee for the Florida Sunshine State award grades 3-5. I really liked the book and will highly recommend it to our students when school starts.

FIFA 18 Story Mode - Journey 2

Has Cristiano Ronaldo, because the cover is the development of FIFA 18 one of the biggest changes. Look at the current FIFA 18 Frostbite engine success, this year's performance is certainly worth noting. With the September 29 scheduled release, FIFA 18 is ready to launch. Here are five new changes to FIFA 18 storage:

Alex Hunter's career has received a lot of attention from players around the world, "The Journey" the first season there are more than 1400 million field. Obviously, adding this story mode is a huge jump for FIFA and EA. In the year of the year, ready to find some exciting European action, as young players enter one of Europe's leading clubs.

This year, Alex will be in Cristiano Ronaldo next to the organization, game developers desire in the game world to find the celebrity's global reputation. This season may also be in front of the football fanatical look Hunter mentality: in the story part of the model, to predict an exciting conflict.

The atmosphere of the stadium and the roaring crowd are the first choice for football all over the world. Buy Cheap FIFA 18 Coins in a great way to improve this, will be a lot of stadiums and even more popular stadium are together. For example, the stadium in South America has flags and read the audience, as well as reflect the tropical climate of the region. This provides a more realistic scene during playback.

It is often troublesome when a friend suddenly stops a game to change a contestant or is replaced by a trauma. EA includes a live live replacement feature that allows the player to create a quick replacement when the game continues. In the case of an injury, the replacement of the replacement appears almost immediately on the screen and can be changed automatically. This makes playback more enjoyable and easy, almost without interruption.

In a recent report, FIFA producers insisted that the game experience be more realistic, as long as the TV live and FIFA football match between the very difficult. FIFA's recent simulations show that the huge advances in graphics technology are similar to those of true football players' faces. FIFA's latest version should be the case.

As mentioned earlier, the dribbling in FIFA 17 seems to be slow and difficult to execute throughout the game. In FUT 18 Coins, dribbling is redefined, not just focus on control, and more of the basic left-handed mock sticks. This may be a refreshing change that should make the game more enjoyable and then the novice is easier.
