Chain Letter - Christopher Pike

Ehhh.

Pike tried really hard to spin this one so that it ended somewhat happily/bittersweetly. I don't know that it worked for me. Also, I'm not sure that it would have been physically possible for the killer to do all of that. Then there's the unexplained blood at the one house. And just how stupid are the cops in this town?

There have now been two possible deaths, but since there are no bodies, who knows what's really going on.

My guess is that Neil is secretly dying. Many mentions have been made of his diabetes and his limp (which requires surgery that he says he and his mother have almost saved up enough for him to get). He is also losing hair and weight fast enough for it to be noticeable. And the task the Caretaker has given him? Get sick in class.

The question is whether he's also the Caretaker. Possibly doing all of this in a final effort to punish those involved in the desert dude's death?

Amusing out of context:

"'The person who sent this letter is alive,' Tony said firmly. 'It might even be, like you suggested, someone in the group. But it's certainly not a psychic zombie who can give us diabetes from a distance or force us to turn ourselves in against our will.'"

My goal for the weekend is going to be to finish this, choose a 2018 book, and maybe read Dramacon (it doesn't look like graphic novels count for Snakes and Ladders, so this will be a break from the game). And I'm heading off in a bit to see Captain Marvel with a friend.

I haven't had much of a chance to get into this yet, but so far it's kind of bad. It's actually a group of 7 people, and apparently they accidentally killed someone (or left someone for dead). I'm having trouble keeping all the names straight, and the chain mail aspect is less creepy than amusing.

They've been told that they're supposed to go down the list - the first person to get the letter, Fran, is supposed to complete a task that's listed in the local personal ads, then cross her name off, put it on the bottom of the second list, make a copy of the letter, and mail it to the next person on the list. The first task: repaint the school mascot's head with red and black paint so that it's a goat (the original mascot is a koala). Meanwhile, I'm wondering how many Frans are at this school, and how long it would take for a school official to connect the instructions in the personal ad (which include the name "Fran") with whatever happens to the image of the mascot.
