Island of the Dolls
Island of the Dolls (World's Scariest Places Book 4) - Jeremy Bates

On the Outskirts of Mexico City lies Isla de las Munecas - a reportedly haunted island that is home to thousands of dolls. A group of people are going to film a documentary on this island against the boatman's better judgement to wait until the storm passes. While stranded there overnight, the wind and rain add to the already spooky atmosphere but when they discover a dead body they begin to realize that something evil really is lurking on the island.

This was a fast-paced read. I really liked the setting and felt as though I was there. Most of the characters were unlikable but they did feel real and I liked that they were different from one another and had their flaws. A lot went on during the last couple of chapters but overall I was happy with the ending. Another good read from the World's Scariest Places series!

Beyond Dolls & Guns: 101 Ways to Help Children Avoid Gender Bias - Susan Hoy Crawford,Crawford, Susan Hoy Crawford, Susan Hoy

This book has some good information on the basics of gender bias. It was written in the 90's so some of the information is a bit out of date, but (sadly), most of it is still very relevant today. Crawford did a good job focusing on various topics such as issues for boys, sexist language, and how to cope. I did like the appendixes in the book which were "Nonbiased, Inclusive Language", "Research Summaries" (on girls and boys), and "Famous Women in History". This first focuses on problems with language used and replacement words, which was very helpful. I also enjoyed the last appendix, which give brief information on a variety of women (not just white women). Overall, a good read with some important information, if a little bit out of date.

Cute Dolls for "Frozen" fans
Anna and Elsa Crochet Patterns for 18 inch Dolls: A stitch by stitch guide with pictures and easy to follow instructions - SARAH Beth Buckhouse

I got this book for free and if my girls were younger (they are now teens and too cool for things like this), I would make several. The pattern looks like it would work up quickly and there were good photos to help make the dolls. I do recommend this book for people who are able to knit or crochet.

DOLLS by Matt Shaw
Dolls - Matt Shaw

Synopsis:

“He understood why she did it. She had lost her own baby – one conceived by the unwanted advances of a sexual predator – and hated thinking of them out there in the cemetery, alone and cold. She had to bring them into the warm. She had to give them the life they’d otherwise never live. It was her mission. But with each new doll brought home, her yearning for a living child of her own continued to grow. Yes, he knew why she did it but – even so – he wasn’t able to stand by her and he knew she was going to get a lot worse before she got better. But how do you help someone who doesn’t want to be helped? And how do you turn your back on your own sister?”

IDK what stopped me from reading this title earlier, (published 02.02.16), but I’m happy that I finally did! DOLLS feels like one of Matt Shaw‘s older titles – it’s not a black cover, not an extreme extreme horror, and the core story totally sucked me in. I was 100% invested right from Jump Street. Now, as embarrassing as this might be, I gotta tell ya… I didn’t see the ‘oh holy shit’ moment until about 5 words before it was revealed to us! I love that Matt can still do that after all these years, and all these books.
