quote 2020-02-11 16:47
‘Yes,’ he continued, ‘that is one of the great secrets of life. Nowadays most people die of a sort of creeping common sense, and discover when it is too late that the only things one never regrets are one’s mistakes.’

quote 2015-05-03 18:22
We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely.

quote 2015-05-03 18:18
All art is at once surface and symbol.

Those who go beneath the surface do so at their own peril.

Those who read the symbol do so at their own peril.

It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors.

quote 2015-05-01 17:54
'[...] And now, my dear young friend, if you will allow me to call you so, may I ask if you really meant all that you said to us at lunch?'

'I quite forget what I said,' smiled Lord Henry. 'Was it all very bad?'
The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde

- The Picture of Dorian Grey, ch. 3

I feel like this is the key to the character of Lord Henry, really. He says all of this intelligent, deep-thinking stuff, which makes you go DDDDDD: O_O!!! ... And then it turns out that he was just saying it to impress people, and he (apparently) does not really believe any of it. I don't know if that exactly takes the value away from it ... but ... DAMN IT, LORD HENRY, YOU ARE NOT MAKING ANY SENSE!

quote 2015-05-01 17:44
'I can sympathise with everything, except suffering,' said Lord Henry, shrugging his shoulders. 'I cannot sympathise with that. It is too ugly, too horrible, too distressing. There is something terribly morbid in the modern sympathy with pain. One should sympathise with colour, the beauty, the joy of life. The less said about life's sores the better.'
The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde

- The Picture of Dorian Grey, ch. 3

Interesting point of view ... even if I don't agree wth it ;). Because I don't think we talk about "life's sores" nearly enough. We're actually rather good at ignoring them.
