Review - Firefly Legacy Edition Book 1
Firefly - Joss Whedon,Brett Matthews,Chris Samnee,Will Conrad,Patton Oswalt,Zack Whedon

It's a good book, as a collection of the comics; and I'm looking forward to book 2. But it wasn't sparkling.

The art itself is good quality, and the humour was typical Firefly Serenity as I remember the TV shows. However, I found the pacing to be off and I failed to connect in places; the flow wasn't there and I ended up looking at a panel and wondering what the connection to the previous panel was, and why was I now reading something which seemed totally disjointed.

There were some good parts in it, and the plot is what I'd expect. They never do get to keep the gold, despite all the trouble they go to.

It did go in to Shepherd Book's history; in an interesting reverse fashion, showing key snippets of his life and the decisions he made.. but in reverse. In each section, he was younger than in the previous. It was a very engaging part of the book.

Although I'm not like a cat on a hot tin roof waiting for book 2, I am looking forward to its eventual arrival in February.

REVIEW BY MERISSA - Hexed (Paranormal Tales from Firefly Island) by Alyssa Drake
Hexed (Paranormal Tales from Firefly Island) - Alyssa Drake

Hexed is the first novella in the Paranormal Tales from Firefly Island series, and it tells the story of Remy - an undeveloped Witch who just wants to be normal. And by normal, she means being able to do spells like the rest of her family and friends. She doesn't have a very good time of it, and leaves home for pastures new when she is eighteen. However, that doesn't go quite according to plan either, so she ends up returning to Firefly Island to spend some time with her sister. One of the first people she bumps into is Sebastian, and things move quickly onward from there.

This is a fast-paced novella, with some steamy scenes in it. You will learn more about Remy's past, and the reason things were done in the way they were. Remy and Sebastian have their HFN ending, but it does leave it wide open for at least three more stories!

All in all, this was a very enjoyable, quick read, with no editing or grammatical errors to disrupt my reading. A nice introduction to Firefly Island, and I look forward to getting better acquainted in future books. Absolutely recommended by me.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *

Firefly Lane
Firefly Lane - Kristin Hannah I’ve read through lots of reviews of Kristin Hannah’s, Firefly Lane, and found some truth in all. It’s not usually my kind of book, but I took a chance. I’m glad I did. I don’t review what the book is about, that’s what the back cover does. My review is of the writing.
Is it cliché? Yes, but what story isn’t? Whether a book is about romance, friendship, war or peace, its all been done before. It’s all in how you mix the details. As a writer myself, I’ve always been told you’ve got to keep piling the troubles on to keep the reader interested. And, while that is true to keep a story going, I think you have to have triumphs mixed in there too. Get the characters some rewards along the way, but with the whisper of troubles ahead. Ms Hannah does this skillfully. I think that is why some people found this such a great story. Lives have ups and downs, that’s how the tale of them should go.
I didn’t expect the climactic last four chapters or so. Something I myself have lived through. While painful to recall, they were very accurate and sad.
It’s a thick book, but when you’re covering 30 years what do you expect? While I don’t have a small fraction of Ms Hannah’s fans, I can clearly see why they love her writing. This turned out to be a great read and I give it my highest recommendation.

Back Home at Firefly Lake
Back Home at Firefly Lake - Jen Gilroy Jen Gilroy takes readers home again. Back to the painful moments, the heartbreaking disappointments and a chance at finding out where a person really belongs. Firefly Lake is the place in the review mirror, that continues to call your name. A place that allows healing, redemption and new beginnings. Cat was the girl who never fit in. Luc was the boy with the world at his feet. Until life got in the way and brought the big hockey star and the single mother, back to their roots. Back Home at Firefly Lake is about being strong enough to move forward, when the world tries to hold you back.
