The Cloister Walk
The Cloister Walk - Kathleen Norris (This book extols a distinctively Christian worldview. Forewarned is forearmed.)

I read this every year, in December/January. It focuses me, stripping away some of the materialism that's built up in my life in the previous twelve months. It reminds me of my priorities in dealing with other humans, encouraging me to be patient and kind. I first read this in 1997, during a Christmas break at my old ranch high (10,000-plus feet) in the Colorado Rockies. Even though I wasn't surrounded by Benedictine monks—as Norris is—but was immersed in young children with cases of cabin fever as the snow flew, The Cloister Walk was like a cozy sweater, warming and peaceful. And Norris' voice is as clear now, thirty years later, as it was then.

Obviously, a favorite.

Revelation
Revelation - Anonymous,Kathleen Norris That's an hour I'll never get back. I could imagine nothing worse than believing the drivel that was in this book to be real and is the inspired work of an all knowing book writer and then spending the years it would take to fully understand the nonsense that spewed out of this book, and then most assuredly realizing that studying this book is as relevant as studying the efficacy of parapsychology and astrology only in the end to realize that years of your life that was wasted in believing this comic book like drivel would have been better spent fully understanding the Marvel Comic universe instead. Stan Lee is more inspired than the writer of this nonsense. At least Marvel Comics doesn't pretend to really be talking for God.

On My Nightstand
The Little Book of Talent: 52 Tips for Improving Your Skills - Daniel Coyle
How to Be a Woman - Caitlin Moran
Girls Gone Wise in a World Gone Wild - Mary A. Kassian
Acedia & Me: A Marriage, Monks, and a Writer's Life - Kathleen Norris

I couldn't help but add a few more books to my nightstand book pile. I have been meaning to read Girls Gone Wise in a World Gone Wild for years and this is my chance to cross it off my list. I heard about How To Be A Woman from Emma Watson's Book Club and thought it was an interesting read. I haven't decided which one I will read first but I can't wait to dive in.

Mother - Kathleen Thompson Norris

I wish I had read this when I was younger; I would have appreciated it more. It is a sweet story, very much similar to Little Women, in my opinion. Margaret reminded me of Meg and Jo many times, and of course, her mother was almost identical to Mrs. March.
