Audiobook Review: Nice Girls Don't Date Dead Men
Nice Girls Don't Date Dead Men - Molly Harper,Amanda Ronconi
Nice Girls Don't Date Dead Men picks up the story of Jane Jameson’s newly turned vampire life shortly after the conclusion of the previous book. Listeners discover that Jane’s BFF, Zeb, and his beloved, Joelene, are getting married, and Jane is the maid of honor. We also discover that Jane and her mom have found some sort of peace, but that her sister is suing her. The book generally follows the day-to-day going-ons of Jane's crazy life, tossing in Jane’s familiar humor and quirky observations.

Overall, I enjoyed the second offering in the Jane Jameson series. I love Jane's snark and the general humorous mood of the story. Jane's life is one crazy event after another, and generally, she handles everything with a sense of humor and a few tears. However, both Jane's and Zeb's family are overly cruel, making some of the story difficult to digest with the lightness intended in the story. Jane's grandmother and sister are outrageous and mean. The same goes with Zeb's mom, Ginger, who does everything and more to get Zeb and Jane together. It got to the point where I could no longer listen to her manipulations; they went beyond outrageous and straight into despicable. Although Jane handles herself with her typical sarcasm, it got to the point of annoying, and I was frustrated at how much Jane put up with.

Don’t get me wrong, I really did like the book, and fortunately, those scenes weren’t as numerous as the good ones. I did like seeing Jane learn how to maneuver in the vampire world and learn to stand up more for herself. I also liked seeing her somewhat odd romance with her sire Gabriel evolve and grow. My favorite parts of the book were those interactions between Jane and her boss/surrogate-grandfather, Mr. Wainwright. Additionally, I found Dick Cheney to be my favorite character as he matures just enough to be lovable but retains his core personally.

Amanda Ronconi turns in another excellent portrayal as Jane, along with the host of other southern characters. She nails both the charm of a southern lady, as well as the guilt of the southern mama. And the few things that slightly bothered me in her performance during the previous book didn’t seem as noticeable in this story.

Nice Girls Don't Date Dead Men is an entertaining, light-hearted story, perfect for enjoying during the lazy days of summer.

My Rating: B
Narration: A-

Nice Girls Don't Date Dead Men - Molly Harper

Review

I am a big fan of the folks in Half Moon Hollow. Jane is a great character. She's funny and doesn’t stand down when others are complete jerks to her.

In this book Jane shows just what a great friend she is when she's forced to wear a hideous bridesmaid dress. It may not seem like anything huge, but ugly dresses are awful! She is constantly berated by her Grandma Ruthie. That is one woman that can grate on your nerves. She's so single-minded, and paints herself as a victim when it comes to dealing with Jane.

The shenanigans that Zeb's in-laws pull are hilarious and mortifying. I think they forget that he's human sometimes, or do it because they know he is. I also like that Harper shows that relationships are work regardless of if you are living or undead. She is constantly having to struggle when it comes to her relationship, and that made it very real to me.

I love these books, and want more of Jane Jameson.

Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs - Molly Harper
Nice Girls Don't Date Dead Men - Molly Harper
Nice Girls Don't Live Forever - Molly Harper
Nice Girls Don't Bite Their Neighbors - Molly Harper

I had a sick brat this weekend, so she and I ended up huddled in bed together for the entire weekend.  Not good on the move preparations, but worked quite well for my book reading time.

I LOVED this series.  The author really found the perfect mix of snarky humor, ridiculous hijinks, and romance.  Then she topped it off with good writing and a satisfying ending.  And anyone who has read the Sookie Stackhouse series (which is a grossly inaccurate comparison to this series, not all vamp books are created equal people) knows how important a satisfying ending actually is.

Anyway.

As with any series, there are books that are better than the others.  I think with this one, the first one, Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs, is the weakest.  It just drug on way too much.  However, if you continue on with the series, the latter books most definitely made up for it.  After getting a firm footing into the world, everything seemed to flow and you kept reading just to see what other insane crap can happen to one person.  Jane is a trouble magnet and has managed to surround herself with a group of people almost as crazy as she is.  It makes for ridiculous, yet amusing read with all of the books.  And I can't reiterate enough how happy I was to actually have a series that ended well.

Overall, this is just what I needed in a series this weekend.  It doesn't take itself too seriously and is incredibly enjoyable to read. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of this author's books.

Nice Girls Don't Date Dead Men (Jane Jameson, #2)
Nice Girls Don't Date Dead Men (Jane Jameson, #2) - Molly Harper Vampires, family drama, love drama and laugh out loud moments. LOVED IT! Still wish we learned more about Gabriel. I can't say I'm sold on him as a love interest or leading man. He acts more as a father figure. Dick Cheney on the other hand is hilarious!
