Enjoying a Unique Voice
Psychophilia - Michelle Muckley

I received a free download of Psychophilia from Amazon.

As a writer myself, I know the sacrifices authors make to bring their work to others. There are the untold thousands of hours creating, planning, and perfecting their stories. There are the many hours and dollars spent to format, cover, and promote. Without listing all the expenses, there also are, of course, the lost potential revenues that might otherwise have helped the a author recoup some of his expenses. These come when the author gives away copies, with the hope that readers will enjoy and will leave meaningful and thoughtful reviews that will encourage others to purchase copies. And so it is with these things in mind, that I leave this review in exchange for the free downloaded copy I received of Michelle Muckley's Phychophilia. Let me begin by saying that if you did not manage to get a free copy yourself, you might consider downloading one at whatever cost--today--because this one is absolutely worth it, particularly if you appreciate, as do I, a colorful "voice" to what you read.

-I received this book from the author in a giveaway on Booklikes-

 Charlotte has had an ‘accident’; the problem is that she doesn’t remember what happened, or how she ended up being dragged from a lake as she was drowning.  She no longer remembers a lot of things about herself and her life.  She only knows what she is told by her husband, Gregory.

Gregory is another problem.  He used to love Charlotte, but something has changed and she is stuck with a distant man who looks at her with empty eyes.  Maybe the pregnancy will make him love her again….

Charlotte is willing to go to almost any length to get back the life she once had.  But is it a good idea to go back to the way things were, if she has no idea what type of life it was?

This book is like nothing I have read, and has a haunted quality that I really enjoyed.  The author slowly feeds the reader details about Charlotte’s past.  There were a few slow moments but it shows us what Charlotte is going through herself.  I am happy to recommend, and will definitely read some of the author’s other works.

You see, I believe that to be a good liar you have to put some effort in, some conscious and fore planned thought.

This book is kind of hard for me to rate and review because I didn't like the first half of the book but felt that the second half was much better. I was originally drawn to this because the book description seemed so intriguing but ultimately I feel like the execution of the idea was lacking.

This book follows Charlotte who is dealing with memory loss after a suicide attempt. Not only is she dealing with memory loss but she also thinks that her husband, Gregory, is betraying her. In the beginning of this book I felt like Charlotte seemed really normal and sane but then a couple of chapters in she is all of a sudden OCD, paranoid, and a bit insane. It became hard for me to follow along with this book because Charlotte will be doing something or talking to someone and then she'll just think of something else and kind of daydream. I became confused during the first half of the book and started to lose my interest in the book because of my confusion.

The second half of this book was much clearer than the first half. Things really started to pick up in the second half and there were so many twists towards the end that my interest did start to pick up again. The reasons behind Charlotte's suicide were explained more in the second half and I feel like from the events in the second half it was easy to see why Charlotte was the way she was.

I was never really able to connect with and had a hard time liking any of the characters. I understand that Charlotte had a fragile psyche but she was just so all over the place that it was hard to like her. I did feel a bit bad for her at times, especially with all that was happening with Gregory. I didn't like Gregory one bit, he was a jerk. I tolerated Ishiko. I actually started to like her a bit (or maybe respect her) when she actually started fighting back towards Charlotte.

There were some mysteries in this in regards to Charlotte's memory loss and I feel already knew what had happened when they were eventually revealed. I did still enjoy reading those parts because of the twists and turns that Charlotte was experiencing.

The beginning of this book was chaotic and had me losing interest in this book but the second half really picked up and I enjoyed the book more. I received this book from a Booklikes giveaway. The content of my review is in no way affected by that.

The Time Machine Investors - Nuria de la Nuez
Clytie's Caller - Sharon E. Cathcart
Psychophilia - Michelle Muckley

As a newbie on BookLikes, I was extremely excited when I discovered the giveaways. Thinking of it as a lottery, a game of numbers, I entered ALL the giveaways that were organized for what-looked-like interesting books, hoping that, maybe, I will win one.

I have received seven so far!

And I have made a commitment to myself that I will read and review all of them, of course. But, God, when? And, please, make them stop!

Am I complaining about winning? No! Or am I? I guess I am... a little...

Seriously now, I want to thank all the authors for organizing giveaways, for sending me their work, and I also want to thank the automatic system that chose me as a winner (w00t! w00t!).

Also, a word to the authors: please be patient with me, I do have a day job, unfortunately :(

Short Review;

I received a free copy of this from a giveaway the author.

This was a really unique and interesting story, I haven't ever read anything like this before.

Long Review;

This is a story about a woman, Charlotte, who is recovering from memory loss and psychosis she is pregnant and thinks her husband Gregory is having an affair. This is quite a disturbing story where you really get into Charlotte's mind.
Charlotte really wants to gain the affection of her husband back and has some quite dark thoughts about murdering a few people.

The writing is great and very descriptive, I found it really captivating in places and hard to put down, it really picks up towards the end and there are defiantly several things I did not see coming. Including something that had me sitting on my couch like, WHAT!

Only thing I didn't like much was it felt it dragged a little at points.

If your into things that make you think and twist your mind, pick this up!!
