Replica
Replica - Lauren Oliver
Replica, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I’ve always been intrigued by Miss Oliver’s books, this is just the first one I’ve had a chance to pick up.

The Characters:

Lyra: A girl raised in a lab for unknown purposes, taught to believe that she is less than human.
Gemma: A girl raised by her parents as a delicate flower due to childhood and on going illnesses.

The Story:

Gemma and Lyra meet because the lab where Lyra was raised, Haven, is pretty much attacked. The why is kind of sketchy but I feel like as the story unfolds in future books we will learn more about it. So much goes on in this book, told first in Lyra’s POV then in Gemma’s that I can not give a quick summary. It was good and a bit crazy and a little scary. The story ends in a way that makes it leaves it wide open to go anywhere. I’m very ready for the next book.

The Random Thoughts:

Gemma’s obsession with her weight is irksome. Especially because in my mind she is probably a size 10 or 12 and really not as big as she has been lead to believe.

The Score Card:

not for me
Replica - Lauren Oliver Too many books to read, not worth my time to finish even as audio book. Gave up halfway through Lyra's story. Neat idea, and I'm pretty sure for the right audience this would be a winner. To me it's just a bit too standard.

Replica - Lauren Oliver

***I WISH THIS BOOK HAD COME WITH INSTRUCTIONS***

So here: Start with whichever story you'd like. Gemma or Lyra. After each chapter, flip the book over and read the other characters chapter. Read and repeat.

I read Gemma entirely. Then Lyra entirely. I struggled with one story more than the other, but genuinely liked and enjoyed both. I believe I may have LOVED this book, had I read it properly.

The concept is awesome. The plot is great. When Helix comes out in 2017, I'll read it the right way and enjoy the stories the way they were meant to be.

Replica - Lauren Oliver

I was glad that I started with the Lyra side of this novel as I felt that it set up the novel for me. The Lyra side didn’t contain as much detail as the Gemma side of the novel contained but it laid the story out for me, set the stage for the characters and it made me hungry for the rest of the novel. I had read all sorts of ways to attack this novel as there are two sides of this story, Lyra’s and Gemma’s and by flipping this novel over, you get to read both sides of the story.   The popular way is to read them simultaneously, by flipping the novel back and forth, reading them together but I am one individual who likes to hear one side of the story at a time so I chose to read the shorter side first.

Lyra is one of the individuals who are living on Haven, an island off the coast of Florida which is inhabited by humans and Replicas. Just like the name sounds, these Replicas are models, models created and living amongst other humans on the island. It is hard to tell the difference between a human and a Replica, you have to look very carefully to notice their differences. I would love to tell you more about the novel but I fear that I would spoil the novel but there are a few things that I think you should know to entice you to read this novel. The only individuals who leave the island are the staff and there are “rumors” about what actually is occurring on the island.  Gemma knew nothing about this island until her best friend April and her were planning their Spring Break to Florida and Gemma’s father suddenly put the brakes on their plans. Frustrated, angry and now intrigued as to why her father doesn’t want her in Florida, Gemma starts to do some investigating on her own. Amazing too, Gemma’s house is now suddenly being vandalized but Gemma believes it is the girls from school.   I loved how the author pulled these two stories together, their stories gradually weaving together, their two separate, distinct lives slowly crossing over boundaries and merging together until they somehow unite. Lauren Oliver did it again; she’s proven to me again why she is one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait till the next installment!

Replica - Lauren Oliver

I keep having such high hopes for Oliver's books. Before I Fall is one of my top five books of all time, but nothing else she's written has compared. Conceptually, I always get really excited, but Replica too fell flat of my expectations.

I'd definitely recommend reading this in alternating chapters. Otherwise, I don't really see the point of reading whoever's story you read second. I'm incredibly indecisive so I decided to read them in alternating chapters and I'm glad I did--there weren't spoilers, persay, but you know what's going to happen.

I really love the premise of having the same story from two different viewpoints...but I just don't  think it was necessary here. I love the idea Oliver was going for, that people view events in extremely different ways, but I found a lot of the repeated scenes felt a little redundant. (Maybe they wouldn't have if I'd read them one at a time?)

This nonetheless was a solid read and I enjoyed the mystery behind the clones, though I found it a little hard to buy.

Once again, a great premise from Lauren Oliver that didn't meet my hopes.
