The Umbrella Academy, Vol. 1: Apocalypse Suite - Gerard Way,Gabriel Bá
For more reviews, check out my blog: Craft-Cycle

With the Netflix adaptation of the series coming out today, I spent the last week reading this, because as much as I can I like to read the book-form of things before they get turned into movies/shows.

Overall, I liked it. The concept was really intriguing. At times, the story is a little hard to follow. There were moments I had to re-read the previous page to figure out what was happening or make sure my confused understanding of what was happening was actually what was happening. But for the most part, I really enjoyed reading it and getting taken along the strange and fantastical journey.

My favorite character was Rumor. I wish she was featured more in this one, but hope to learn more about her in the following books. I love the Free Comic Book Day comic, because so much of it focuses on Rumor.

Artwork was good as well. Very gory so if that is not your cup of tea, probably skip this one. It was a bit gory for my taste, but not so much so that I didn't want to continue reading. I still want to read the next book to know more about the strange universe Way has created.

I also enjoyed the bonus features at the back which include development sketches of the characters, a two page teaser, and the Free Comic Book Day story, which I absolutely loved.

So excited to watch the Netflix adaptation and see how it holds us as well as continue reading the series.

The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection
The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, #13) - Alexander McCall Smith

This is one of those “bubble bath for the brain” series that I used to love turning to after heavy reads. I lost track of it for years and now I’m several books behind. I’m both pleased and dismayed that McCall Smith is still cranking one of these out every year; pleased because I enjoy my brain bubble baths, dismayed because this book feels a bit like MS is out of ideas and is just ticking established character traits off a checklist.

Mma Ramotswe drinks red bush tea and drives her tiny white van and repeatedly declares herself “traditionally built”: check.

Mma Makutsi adjusts her round glasses, covets higher status in the agency, and has conversations with her shoes: check.

Motholeli and Puso briefly make an appearance and do cute well-adjusted children stuff: check.

Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni relates current events/people to cars: check.

Charlie and Fanwell say or do something foolish: double check.

Mma Potokwani bosses people around and serves fruit cake: check.

Violet Sephotho is vain and somehow the villain: check.

I could keep going, but I’m sure you get the idea. Added to the increasing feeling of same-old, same-old is a growing suspicion that the author is now on auto-pilot, and that’s why all these characters are sort of stagnating and we’re getting awkward pull-me-out-of-the-story things like a white man from Muncie, Indiana speaking with the exact same syntax as the residents of Gaborone. I’m hoping this is just me or the author having an off-book, so to speak, and not a sign that the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency should have shut its doors on a higher note back in book 12.

I enjoyed my little visit to McCall Smith’s version of Botswana, but not nearly as much as I used to.  Here’s hoping the magic is back in the next book.

Not For Me
Academy Girls - Nora Carroll

At Grove Academy they learned three lessons: literature is a kind of religion , only failures got married, and though we would eventually leave the academy, the spirit of the Grove would always stay with us. They were careless about the way we discussed our futures. Kat was the poet, Lissa the beauty, and Jane-me- who was suppose to be the serious one. They held fast to ideals- truth, good manners, beauty, and to far flung destinies. All of them assumed that the Grove would open her arms to welcome them again, if the need should ever arise. 35 years later- Jane’s son - charlie- who is now fifteen jane lives for Charlie. They had just come to the Grove. If she screwed this up they would have nothing. Jane felt this is what the Grove would have taught them- First: don’t believe what they tell you in books, Second: marry money Third: the third lesson may have been right after all. Jane was a divorcee, mother of one, a failed novelist, broke and given a one year position to teach English to seniors at the Grove. Lissa is married to the television producer Martin Edelstein and he intervened on Jane’s behalf for the job. This was no longer just a school for girls but coed. It was now hardley- Grove Academy. At one time Jane had sworn to never set foot in the Grove again and for a very good reason she was trying hard not to think about. They needed jane to be the housemother of Abbott North. Charlie will be with a dorm full of girls and expected to be a good respectful boy.

I just couldn’t get into this book. I tried two different times and this dragged for me. It also just didn’t hold my attention. I am sure others will really like it, just wasn’t for me.
