‘Yes,’ he continued, ‘that is one of the great secrets of life. Nowadays most people die of a sort of creeping common sense, and discover when it is too late that the only things one never regrets are one’s mistakes.’

All art is at once surface and symbol.

Those who go beneath the surface do so at their own peril.

Those who read the symbol do so at their own peril.

It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors.

'[...] And now, my dear young friend, if you will allow me to call you so, may I ask if you really meant all that you said to us at lunch?'

'I quite forget what I said,' smiled Lord Henry. 'Was it all very bad?'

I feel like this is the key to the character of Lord Henry, really. He says all of this intelligent, deep-thinking stuff, which makes you go DDDDDD: O_O!!! ... And then it turns out that he was just saying it to impress people, and he (apparently) does not really believe any of it. I don't know if that exactly takes the value away from it ... but ... DAMN IT, LORD HENRY, YOU ARE NOT MAKING ANY SENSE!
