Weekend Surprise - City Boy, Southern Girl

City Boy, Southern Girl blurb

Growing up in a small town, Sarah Wright knew city boy Jake Ryland was going to be trouble the minute she saw him.

In order to help a friend, Jake moved from his home in the city - with its vast amounts of entertainment options and women - to a small town in the middle of nowhere. Accustomed to the fast paced life he loved, life now seemed to move as slow as the molasses the South was known for. Until he met Sarah.

Sarah knew Jake’s stay in town was temporary, and did her best not to be drawn in by his charm and good looks. And after a disastrous first date, she thought she was safe. Little did she know...

As their relationship builds, so does their chemistry...and their feelings for one another. Do they try to find a way to make it work, even though they come from different worlds? Or do they walk away now and wonder what might have been?

AUTHOR BIO:

There's just something about a small town that makes relationships interesting, whether they are romances, long-running feuds, or life-long friendships. These are the relationships H.C. Bentley enjoys discovering and exploring. Well that, and the fact she just loves a good happily ever after or second chance story.

When she's not writing, H.C. works as a cataloging librarian at her county library. In her spare time, you can find her playing pool, traveling with her family, or curled up watching movies (romantic comedies are a favorite!). She's also an avid reader, leaning towards various authors of romance and chick lit, but her favorite is Nora Roberts.

A southern girl at heart, H.C. calls Kentucky her home. After opting to join the military to pay for college, she spent three years stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany before returning to her hometown in rural western Kentucky, where she and her husband live with their two daughters.

H.C. loves chatting with readers. You can contact her through her website, or any of her social media.

Blog Tour w/Review - The Boy Friend

The Boy Friend by Mika Jolie

Date of Publication: April 25, 2017

Blurb:

According to the law of attraction, women and men can't be friends.

Contrary to this myth, my friendship with Coriander Phillips does not rest on unrequited love or un-actualized lust. We've been inseparable since the day I pulled one of her pigtails and she punched me in the gut.

She's hilarious, fun to hang out with. Together, we're like peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti and meatballs, wings and beer. A match made in heaven.

She's the bomb.

Did I mention she's smokin' hot? I've checked her out…maybe once or twice. Hey, I'm a guy.

Seriously, no awkwardness, no secret yearning for our relationship to escalate beyond the purely platonic. I'm the boy friend—the loyal shoulder she cries on, the dispenser of coffee, sympathy, hugs, advice, and affection with no expectations.

Until the invisible line between friends and lovers became blurry.

Now I want more. I want her.

All I have to do is convince her we can be more than friends.

Right?

If only it were that easy.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Dean & Coriander AKA Cori are best friends. Yes, just friends. Only everyone around them either doesn't believe them, or thinks they should be together. How can one find a significant other in the middle of all of this?

Cori wants to settle down. Dean wants to be the best friend for her that he can be. So what if he is suddenly finding himself thinking of her all day and all night. Is this the time to take a chance? Would the future be brighter if they gave it a try?

This was a such a fun and easy read. I really love these characters. They truly care about one another. The sexy times between them are hot too. Such an incredible and funny book! I loved it and found it hard to put down. Sure hope we visit these characters again soon.

Recipe Sharing – Salted caramel brownies

by Dean Conrad Morello

One of Coriander ‘Moonchild’ Phillips guilty pleasures is the combination of salted caramel anything. Tonight I’m baking one of her favorites—salted caramel brownies.

This recipe takes indulgent, fudgy chocolate brownies to the next level with a layer of salted caramel running through the center of each bite.

INGREDIENTS:

200g unsalted butter, plus a little extra for greasing

100g chocolate70% cocoa solids

100g chocolate50% cocoa solids

397g can Carnation caramel

1 tsp flaky sea salt,

plus a little extra for the top

200g golden caster sugar

4 medium eggs, at room temperature

130g plain flour

50g cocoa powder

PREPARATION:
  1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Grease then line a 23cm square tray bake tin with baking parchment. Melt the butter in a medium pan, break in all the chocolate, then remove the pan from the heat and wait for the cubes to melt.
  2. In a small bowl, mix 175g of the caramel with 1 tsp sea salt – it will loosen up. Put the rest of the caramel in a large bowl with the sugar and eggs, and beat with an electric hand mixer or balloon whisk until even.
  3. Whisk in the chocolate and butter. In another bowl, combine the flour, cocoa and a good pinch of table salt, then sift this on top of the chocolate mix. Beat briefly until smooth.
  4. Pour half the brownie batter into the tin and level it with a spatula. Using a teaspoon, spoon half of the salted caramel on top of the batter layer in 5 thick, evenly spaced stripes. Spoon the rest of the brownie batter on top and smooth it out, trying not to disturb the caramel beneath. Top with the rest of the caramel in the same stripy fashion. Drag a skewer or tip of a knife through the caramel to make a feathered pattern on the top.
  5. Scatter with a little more sea salt, then bake for 25-30 mins or until risen all the way to the middle with a firm crust on top. When ready, the brownie will jiggle just a little when you shake the tin. Let it cool completely in the tin, then cut into squares.

EXCERPT:

I want her.

She wants me.

Just not enough. Actually, she’s smart. We’re a bad idea. I’m well aware of that, except I like bad ideas. Exhaling, I scrub a hand over my face. This unrequited desire needs to be tucked away. I should have put an end to these crazy thoughts from the beginning, but I entertained them . . . like a playful pet. Now, my desire has grown into a ferocious animal.

Acceptance is key here. I need to accept that I’m the boy friend, without the perks, and move on. No need for unnecessary tension. Our circle is tight. Attraction, lust, are part of the human flesh. These wild horses of my mind must be tracked down, captured, and tucked away in the Do-Not-Touch Cori file.

Don't Call Them Trailer Trash by John Brunkowski & Michael Closen
Don't Call Them Trailer Trash: The Illustrated Mobile Home Story - John Brunkowski, Michael Closen

I have lived in several trailer's during my life. Some have been better then houses and some not so much.  I have seen some trailers that look like tin cans and others that look like a house. This book is like an exhibit of the history of the Mobile Home. All through the book it pictures of vintage advertising for Mobile homes. Some are post cards others are pages from magazines, and more. The book was really interesting. The pictures were great.  There are short captions that go with each picture. At the beginning of each chapter there is a page telling you about that point in history of the mobile home, or explaining the difference between a trailer park and trailer court.  I actually had fun looking through this book and seeing all the vintage advertising and learning things I never thought about the Mobile Home.

I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.

But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.
Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about him. Taking a deep breath, I opened my door and slowly walked down our driveway. My heart pounded hard as I started down the sidewalk and headed for Torin’s front door. I paused before hopping onto the porch. Once again, I gave myself a pep talk before pressing the doorbell.

No response. Okay, leave. You tried.

But I couldn’t leave now that I’d made it this far. I pressed the doorbell again and angled my head to listen for movement from inside. Nothing. The garage door was open and I’d seen his Harley, so I knew he was home. Maybe he was asleep. Relieved, I turned to leave.

He yanked the door open. “Can’t stay away from me, can you, Freckles?”

“Don’t flatter…” My voice trailed off when I found myself staring at his bare chest. Not that I was complaining, but did he have something against shirts? “Yourself,” I finished weakly.

He chuckled, drawing my attention upwards, past the water droplets on his chest to the wet hair caressing his shoulders. At least he had a legitimate reason for walking around shirtless this time. Still, you’d think he’d put on a shirt before answering his door.

“Can we talk?” I said.

His brow shot up. “About?”

“The incident at the park.”

He looped a towel I hadn’t noticed around his neck, crossed his arms, and leaned against the doorframe. His eyes narrowed. “What incident?”

“You know, when that girl attacked me and—”

“You tripped and landed on your lovely ass?”

“Lovely…?” My face warmed. “That’s not what happened and you know it,” I protested.

“That’s what I saw.”

“Liar.”
