RULES OF THE GAME:

 Everyone starts on 1. There are two alternative ways to move forward.

1. Read a book that fits the description on the space number as listed below and you can roll two dice to move forward more quickly.

2. However, if you can't find a book to fit the square, don't worry about it. You can read any book, and roll one dice on random.org.  This is to ensure that if a reader cannot find a book to fill the square, no one gets bogged down and can't move on.

All books must be at least 200 pages long. Short stories count, so long as you read enough of them from a collection to equal 200 pages. 

You do not need to hit space 100 with an exact roll. In order to win, you must complete space 100 as written.

ADDITIONS TO THE RULES

When you start on square 1, you need to read a book before you can roll. If your book fills the square, you get to roll two dice. If your book doesn't not fit the square, roll one dice only.

With respect to the ladder squares: You must read a book in order to climb the ladder. Once you finish the book for the ladder square, climb the ladder to the ending square. If you read a book that fits the ending square, roll two dice to move on, otherwise, roll one dice.

For audiobook substitutions, either check the print book to determine if it is more than 200 pages long, or any audiobook that is a minimum of 5 hours & 30 minutes qualifies.

I first read this one in 2014. I've been making my way rather slowly through the series, and I own most of the back half of the books. I noticed the other day that the entire series is available on kindle unlimited at this point, and decided that this would be a good time to revisit my dear friend, Brother Cadfael.

I don't know what it is about the months of November & December, but I am drawn to fiction set during the medieval or the Victorian eras. It's probably because so many of our Yule/Christmas/Winter solstice traditions are drawn from those eras. Whatever the reason is, I definitely gravitate to historical fiction/historical mystery during the season.

Speaking of historical mystery, I finished Dark Fire, by C.J. Sansom. I didn't loved it as much as I loved Dissolution, and the first part seemed to drag a bit for me, but I did end up really enjoying it. And now that Cromwell is dead, I am curious to see where Matthew Shardlake's future takes him, having made an enemy of the Duke of Norfolk. I bought Sovereign with some of my kindle dollars, and I'm going to be starting that one very soon.

I loved, loved, loved this book. In no particular order, some of the things I loved:

- Brother Cadfael himself. He has a past he's not ashamed of; and he won't let anyone else shame him for it either.

- The entire town of Gwytherin, their sense of justice and redemption, and the way they come together to protect their own.

- Sioned and Annest. They work within the strictures of their society to achieve their personal goals.

- The resolution. I wasn't surprised at who the culprit was, but the last couple of chapters threw me for a loop in how the issue was handled. I'll admit I was laughing very hard at certain parts near the end.

I'm going to continue with this series, to see where Cadfael's fortunes take him next.

I love Sioned. In an environment where a dead virgin saint's hypothetical opinions are given more respect than those of a living woman, she's an amazing force of both reason and passion.

Brother Cadfael himself found nothing strange in his wide-ranging career, and had forgotten nothing and regretted nothing. He saw no contradiction in the delight he had taken in battle and adventure and the keen pleasure he now found in quietude.

Just a few pages in, and I'm completely sold on Brother Cadfael. I love that he's had a full life, and that he regrets none of it: not the wars, not the women, not the pleasure and strife. He comes to the monastery not as someone wanting to repent for his past, but as a man ready for the next stage in his life. What a wonderful attitude!
