Descartes' Error: Emotion, Reason and the Human Brain
Descartes' Error: Emotion, Reason and the Human Brain - Antonio R. Damasio I have already read Damasio's 2003 book, Looking for Spinoza: Joy, Sorrow, and the Feeling Brain, and while it was interesting to read this book, published in 1994, it does not add to what the later book contained, the later book travels further and I preferred the more philosphical style of the more recent book. The strength of this particular book is its painstaking accumulation of evidence, which for some readers will be what they most desire, but for others will appear dry [though in fairness, his clinical case studies are fascinating and more than slightly disturbing]. I have long felt that Damasio's account of the embodied nature of our minds, his materialist account of human consciousness, is superior to any other that I have read, and for this I recommend going straight to Looking for Spinoza.

Give Me A Reason
Give Me A Reason - Lyn Gardner This book left us overwhelmed. The huge number of emotions that this book evokes is unbelievable. It is long, but unputdownable. It draws you in immediately and keeps you firmly engaged.

Gardner has created a complex and complexed MC in Toni with a devastating past leaving her with an extreme case of PTSD. In Laura, she has created a deep and sensitive MC. The two together are so awesome that their relationship practically jumps out of the pages and takes firm residence in our hearts.

Life Is but a Dream: "Descartes' Error: Emotion, Reason and the Human Brain" by António R. Damásio
Descartes' Error: Emotion, Reason and the Human Brain - Antonio R. Damasio

(Original Review, 1994-11-17)

Dave Chalmers did a great job of making consciousness popular but his own view was 400 years out of date. Descartes is the real rigorous physicist here - he was after all one of the people who devised physics. What he meant by the soul and God being 'spirit' is that they caused matter to move. Matter for Descartes was just the inert occupancy of a space (extension). So physics consisted of the interaction of spirit and matter. We now call spirit 'force' or 'energy' and Descartes was quite right because thinking is all about electromagnetic fluxes - which in themselves do not occupy space or have mass. His mistake was to think that there had to be one special spirit unit. Leibniz sorted that out in 1714.

REVIEW BY MERISSA - Reason (The Dreughan #2) by Lena North
Reason (The Dreughan #2) - Lena North

Reason is the second book in the Dreughan series, and this time it is Sannah who is the main character. This follows on from Courage and should definitely be read as part of the series, rather than a standalone.

She has said she doesn't want Kee, but we all know she is lying. Through this book, we learn just why she lied, plus how they overcome that and become the happy couple we want them to be. Although this is Sannah's book, and she tells a magnificent story, I will admit to holding Valerian in my heart! He played a part in Vilda's story, and certainly plays a part here. He is kind and considerate, whilst also being firm when needed. He is the General after all.

Vilda and Drake are still going strong, and I love the jokes that happen between this close-knit family by bond.

Once again, I will say there were a couple of errors in this book. But as before, the writing was so good I am more than happy to overlook those as they definitely didn't impact my enjoyment of the story at all.

I am going straight into Joy. I am LOVING this series, with its amazing characters and world building that is good enough for the reader to see, and can't recommend it highly enough. Absolutely fantastic.

* Verified Purchase ~ July 2018. *
