As an author I find it hard, many times, to find books that I think are worth reading. They seem to either be poorly written, plot is all over the place, or just flat out boring. Dhampir was not one of those.

This book pulled me in from the start. I, for the first time in a good long time, I found myself not wanting to go to sleep. Heck, I didn't even want to write! All I wanted to do is go pick up the book, and keep reading!

I wanted to walk, run, and fight alongside Magiere, but then again she already has a partner. There is action and danger around each corner. This book is a thrill ride!

BUT THEN...

Sadly, I finished it. I did excited that there was a couple more books in the series. It is the first time I went out and purchased the rest of the series, and I realized soon after I did that I had made a mistake.

I have never finished book two. For me it just did not have the same draw. I felt so let down.

So, here is what I will say. Dhampir is well worth the read as a stand alone book, but I personally felt that it should have been exactly that; a stand alone.

Sudden Setup is a fantastic romantic suspense by Barb Han.  Ms. Han has delivered a well-written book that will keep you on the edge of your seat and loaded it with a outstanding cast of characters.  Holden has been on the run and hiding for two years after his father and girlfriend were murdered.  While hiding on a far corner of his dad's friend's ranch, he's a witness to an attempt on Ella Butler's life.  Ella and Holden's story is loaded with suspense, bits of humor, spice and action.  I enjoyed this book from cover to cover and look forward to reading more from Barb Han in the future.  Sudden Setup is book 1 of the Crisis: Battle Barge Series but can easily be read as a standalone.  This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

You know how there are hard-boiled mysteries, noir mysteries and cozy mysteries? This feels like cozy humor. (I'm sure there are better designations/genre labels, but I don't know them). There's nothing offensive, nothing boundary pushing, nothing upsetting -- just amusing anecdotes, a slightly off-kilter look at life, and a way with words. Simple entertainment -- pretty much what you're looking for in a collection of humor, right?

I wouldn't recommend sitting down and reading this cover to cover. Sample from it, a little here and a little there over a few days. Taub has a couple of phrases that she really likes, anecdotes that she returns to often (for different ends sometimes) -- and I don't blame her for doing so, when it works, it works. But when you read them too close together, it takes a way from the moment. But that's a minor quibble.

This is a simple, straightforward, collection of amusing, occasionally heart-warming, pleasantly humorous pieces. I feel obligated to say something else about it, but I can't think of anything else to say. Taub's a funny woman, if you like reading funny things, you should read this book.
