I hope Im not wasting your time, my new client said as we kicked of her first session.
You see, Ive been trying to get my consulting business off the ground for the last couple of years and Im spinning my wheels. I have so much knowledge, talent and skill but theyre not doing me much good. What do you mean-theyre not doing you much good? I asked, curious but sensing I already knew the answer.Well, Im wondering if its worth it. I make good money, but its not nearly what I want or really need to be bringing in. And its not just about money.
If I could just get out there in a bigger way, I know I could really help people. Im so passionate about what I do, but Im frustrated. Im not having fun. Im beginning to wonder if Im cut out for being an entrepreneur -- I dont know what to do. Then she said it --Maybe I should just get a job and forget about all this.Ouch.I cringe when I hear people seriously considering a settle strategy. Its not that I dont understand, because I do. You can only struggle so long before you begin to wonder if youre crazy to keep going. And settling for something that wont ultimately make you happy begins to sound pretty darned attractive. But I know something they dont. I know the answer is right in front of them. They just cant see it through all the distractions, noise, confusion and inner-story telling. I know all they really need is a tighter focus and fine tuning to make the shift from struggling best kept secret to a leading expert in their field.Youre always closer than you think. Here are the 4 questions I use to diagnose exactly where the refocusing and fine tuning need to happen, and in what order, to turn things around quickly.
You can use them yourself to get clear on where to start.1. Are you operating from a clear, focused and compelling mission? Sometimes in the process of building a business you lose touch with what drives youthe passion and motive that got you started in the first place. You get so focused on getting it right and following all the rules that suddenly everything feels all wrong! When you disconnect from the source of real sustainable difference in your business -- YOU,all motivation, momentum and fulfillment start to drain away. Youre left to make it happen with sheer grit and determination, which almost never works.2. Are you working from an aligned business model? Does your business resemble a crazy quilt of ideas, products, programs, services and even brands? Or does everything work together -- intentionally -- to create a cohesive, clear and effective customer experience? When sewn together under the umbrella of your business, everything needs to work together and flow. But many entrepreneurs love to create when the inspiration hits. They create products, programs, offerings and websites. And they create a mess. Not all ideas are great ideas. Especially if they take you off mission or muddle up your business model. You may need to do some housecleaning to streamline your products and services but the payoff will be well worth it.3. Is your environment supporting you and your business? I love to garden. If a plant is not thriving, I dont just look at the plant. I also inspect the environment. Are the conditions suitable for it to thrive? Each plant has its unique requirements and I have to know what they are, or Im clueless about why its not doing well. You and your business are no different.
You need your environment to support you and your business. As a business leader you must get nurtured -- creatively, energetically and professionally. Are you clear about what you require to be at your best? Are you vigilant about making sure you are getting your needs met?Are your standards, boundaries, policies, systems, practices and people all in alignment with the vision and mission of your business? Tolerating mediocrity will drag you down faster than almost anything else. So will too many distractions, drains and tolerations. Fix them before they do any more damage.4. Are you taking consistent, confident action to implement your plan? In the end, it all comes down to consistent action. Its hard (if not impossible) to take consistent action if one of the other three areas are out of whack (thats why those questions come first). But sometimes we just dont do what we say well do. We dont do what we can.So before you get tempted to throw in the towel, take a quick check: -- Am I motivated by a meaningful mission or have I gotten off-mission? -- Is my business model clean or a muddled mess? -- Does my environment lift me up or drag me down? -- Am I doing what I can to make this business thrive?

For the last three years, I’ve lived and breathed hockey with one goal: team captain.
There’s only one thing standing in my way. TJ Beckett.
Beck is irresponsible and immature, and I’ve hated him since the moment we met freshman year.
Yet, the coaches see something in him I obviously can’t, and they refuse to choose between us. The captain spot is going to a team vote, and the team thinks that what we need are a bunch of challenges to prove our worth. Challenges that have nothing to do with hockey. Challenges that are throwing me and Beck together.
And he’s still as infuriating as ever.
I have no idea why Christopher Jacobs hates me, and I can’t say I care. I like pushing his buttons, but the guy needs to loosen up. I’m going to win these stupid challenges easily and spend my senior year as hockey king on this campus. Tormenting Jacobs at the same time will just be a bonus.
Even if I’m getting confusing feelings toward him, I won’t let it hold me back.
When it comes to competing, I’m all in, and nothing will get between me and the W.
Face Offs & Cheap Shots by Eden Finley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is book #2 in the CU Hockey Series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. For reader enjoyment, and to avoid spoilers, I recommend reading this in order intended.
Jacobs & Beckett are both up for the position of Team Captain. The leaders believe in competitive motivation, apparently. Now the two men must spend more time together than they ever had in the past.
Is it inevitable that they would learn to appreciate one another in more than just the standard ways? Beckett normally just annoys Jacobs to the point of insanity. Now the attraction is making it hard to keep their secret, or their hands to themselves.
I am thoroughly enjoying this series. These characters are fun, serious, incredible, deep, and more. I found this story to be fascinating and honestly cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Eden Finley is an Amazon bestselling author who writes steamy contemporary romances that are full of snark and light-hearted fluff.
She doesn't take anything too seriously and lives to create an escape from real life for her readers. The ideas always begin with a wackadoodle premise, and she does her best to turn them into romances with heart.
With a short attention span that rivals her son's, she writes multiple different pairings: MM, MMF, and MF.
She's also an Australian girl and apologises for her Australianisms that sometimes don't make sense to anyone else.
