There are a great many books of this ilk around, as so many people cannot tolerate gluten or are choosing to avoid eating it where possible. I decided to read and review it as it appeared to be aimed at the 'diet' market.

The first thing that struck me was the cover - a variation on the 'crossed grain' logo, as used by Coeliac UK. I wonder if this is purely coincidental, or to infer that this book is somehow official. The author's name is omitted from the cover - highly unusual, so I only discovered the author's identity after searching for the book online.

Good points: Contained within the book is an introduction to gluten; what it is and the problems it can cause in the body. This information is fairly comprehensive and could be ideal for someone new to the gluten-free world. There are also a few recipes, and a suggested menu plan for the gluten-free dieter. Some of the ingredients are quite hard to source in the UK, but the menu planner is varied and interesting, appearing appetising enough as to not bore the dieter.

Not-so-good points: There are numerous spelling and grammatical errors, which make the book look unprofessional. The title of this book suggests that the secrets to losing weight by avoiding gluten are contained within the pages. In fact, the diet 'secrets' contained within this book are no secret at all! 'Eat less and move more' is a universal diet approach and is nothing new. If you're looking for a book to help you to lose weight whilst following a gluten-free lifestyle, this is not it.

Emotionally Free : Letting Go of the Past to Live in the Moment - David Viscott

I have to admit, I got mad at this book. Yep, at a book. Why? Because something the author said was absolutely true.

Allow me to elucidate.

At the beginning of the book are some self-evaluation tools that the author has created to figure out the reader's overarching personality type: dependent, controlling, or competitive. And I was pretty angry to come out as a "controlling" type; my immediate response was "That's ridiculous; I don't go around trying to control people." But then I thought about it for a while and realized that I spend a lot of time controlling *myself.* I don't like appearing stupid or incompetent, so I try to make sure that no one ever thinks that. The author acknowledges that we all fall into the other two categories from whatever our overarching one is from time to time, but he wants to help readers understand how they process anger, depression, etc. (what the author calls emotional debt) and why.

So, yes. I learned some uncomfortable things about myself in the process of reading this book. And reading the book is indeed a process. It is not something that can be sped through without giving any thought to what you're taking in.

After the explanations for how each personality type processes emotional debt, there are practical exercises for letting go of that debt. There are also exercises for finding out what you really want from life; they reminded me of the work I did while reading Finding Your Own North Star: Claiming the Life You Were Meant to Live on some levels, although Viscott's methodology is a little different from Beck's.

I have recommended this book to friends before I even finished reading it. I think it's a worthwhile addition to a well-rounded self-help armamentarium.

Reading the description this book looked interesting with elements I like in a sci-fi story, particularly how first contact will change human life. However I'd put off reading it as I'd heard that the author was very right wing and bashed you over the head with it in the book. Now that's an overstatement but if capitalism offends you, this may not be the book for you.

The baddies are commies, and the goodies are capitalist go-getters who hate city dwellers and liberals. That sounds quite partisan, but the author does wrap it all up in a good story, and the writing isn't bad. Unlike the even more right-wing story, One Second After's voices for the characters from Maine.

I liked exploring the idea that with the right determination, and a little smart capitalism, we could seriously get into space in the not too distant future.

spoiler!..... the stupidest part of the book was the partially foiled alien biological attack. The aliens were going to decimate the earth with several strands of virus that would eventually kill everyone without a gene for blonde hair. The attacks that would kill people who weren't blonde were prevented, but one virus package was missed, this would have restored the labour force for the new alien overlords by increasing the fertility of the remaining blonde females. So now humanity has a bunch of blonde women who go on heat once a month and have multiple babies. Why blondes you ask? Besides author's fantasy, the main protagonist, the aliens nemesis, and earth's saviour happened to be be a brunette.
