Harry Bosch solving the murder of an old comrade
The Black Echo - Michael Connelly

A body was found in the pipe.

Harry was working on Sunday. This is his turn to show up on the scene. It was thought of a OD at first.

Not Bosch. He put all the first crime scene data together and it does not sit right with him. So he pushed his way around, and got an autopsy on the next day.

He got in. Got his confirmation. It is not OD but a murder.

That's where the fun begins.

Now he dig further and found that his old comrade was a suspect on a heist.

Only 30% in. Progressing normally. A bit slow. This is Connelly earlier work. And he stick to a format that give you bits of information in a chronological orders. It is like watching TV series 24, that you would not know things that detective Bosch has not come to it yet.

Fun read.

Harry is after a sadistic serial killer Snowman
The Snowman: A Harry Hole thriller (Oslo Sequence 5) by Nesbo. Jo ( 2010 ) Paperback - Jo Nesbo

Married women with children were found to have disappeared without a trace. No body. Nothing.

Harry found that these women were dead and someone has targeted them.

But why?

The reason is strange. The story is getting very close to home.

The details in the story, with Harry refused to enlarge the startup team of four for investigation, to his surprise and strange betrayal by someone close to the investigation. There is so much twist in the story, yet it is seemingly possible.

Like this a lot.

On the love side. He split with Rakel and know they are having an affair while Rakel is dating someone else.

Why can't they just accept that they are just safer if they stay together.

5 stars.

Pop Sugar's 2015 Reading Challenge - July 2015 Update

1. A book written by someone under 30

    - Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

2. A popular author's first book

    - Making Waves (Lake Manawa #1) by Lorna Seilstad (I am assuming "popular" is subjective, as in the inspirational/Christian fiction subgenre, Seilstad's books are popular)

3. A book with bad reviews

   - Out of Control (Kincaid Brothers #1) by Mary Connealy (3.6 rating on NOOK store, 3.7 Good Reads, 3.6 on Amazon). While the ratings on this book seem average, reading the reviews shows a polarity between 5 star gushing and 1-2 star rants. I agree with the rants.

4. A book based on or turned into a tv show:

    - Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth

    - Call the Midwife: Shadows of the Workhouse

    - Call the Midwife: Farewell to the East End

5. A book you were supposed to read in school but did not:

   - Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. It seems everyone else but me read this book (among many other works) in school/university. Good start to my reading list of Steinbeck's books.

6. A trilogy

   - Ruined by a Rake (All's Fair in Love #1) by Erin Knightley

   - Scandalized by a Scoundrel (All's Fair in Love #2) by Erin Knightley

   - Deceived by a Duke (All's Fair in Love #3) by Erin Knightly

Farewell to Friends
Call the Midwife: Farewell to the East End - Jennifer Worth

Trigger Warning: detailed description of back-alley abortion, infanticide, father-daughter (blood-related) incest. And on that cheery note...

The final book in the series was a nice ending and quite the addictive read. The stories found within really filled in the blanks in the plot holes of the tv show. After considering the entire series, I must say the books are far superior; if you have a hard time holding your interest in the tv show, give the books a whirl. Although I enjoy the acting on the show, it is not really holding my interest story wise now that I know the full stories. There were a lot of liberties the show's producers took that do not make sense to me now.

Some of the themes of the book are tuberculosis, infanticide, and back street abortions (abortions were illegal in England until 1967). The people featured in this book are a bit poorer economically than the people in the first book. This books really felt like a sequel to the first book; the second book feels a little out of place with the lack of babies being delivered. And Ms. Worth spends a chapter telling the reader where all the people who she worked with did post-Nonatus' house; it was a nice post script.

4 stars.
