Book Review: Blood From A Stoner by L.A. Witt
Blood from a Stoner: A paranormal gay romance with vampires & weed. In Seattle. Obviously. - L.A. Witt

I first heard of this book when the author talked about it on Facebook - about this romance between a vampire and a stoner. Giggling, I made a note to snatch this up when it became available.

It's a quick read, and just based on the title, you'd think it'd be all fun and sexy times, and you'd be half-right.

Greg is the aforementioned vampire, forever frozen at 24, needing blood, having to stay out of the sunlight, and somewhat regretting his decision to become one of the undead, even if it will allow him to eventually pay off his student loans. He works as a software engineer for an IT company, and since in this particular universe, people (mortals) know about vampires, the company accommodates them by having the vamps work overnight, and provide sleeping quarters in the windowless basement in case of unpaid overtime so they don't have to drive home in the daylight.

Zane is a mortal/human, similar in age to Greg, and works at the same company as a programmer. On whom Greg has a secret crush. Zane also indulges in weed which is legal in Seattle, where they both live and work.

Speaking of work, the company has been putting Greg under a lot of pressure to get the new product ready for release, which means overtime and no days off, and Greg is hangry. Which, being a vampire, is never a good thing.

Then Greg happens upon Zane outside, while taking a minute to breathe, and hangry Greg takes up Zane on his offer of taking a sip or five from Zane's neck. Which is super frowned upon at the company, but hey - whatever. Except Zane has partaken of some pot, unbeknownst to Greg. And now Greg is also a bit high.

I laughed and laughed and laughed at this point, because high vamp was hilarious.

This being an L.A. Witt book, the sexy times are right around the corner, and boy, do they ever burn up the sheets. With or without weed, with or without getting high. The author has a real knack of writing those scenes, and they never felt gratuitous or repetitive.

Obviously, as feelings develop, as they usually do in romance books, Greg now has a problem on his hands - he's immortal. Zane, not so much. And considering how much Greg regrets having chosen this life, he sure as hell won't convert Zane. But thinking of Zane growing older and eventually dying also makes Greg's unbeating heart hurt. What's a vamp to do?

I'll leave you to read this for yourself...

It's not easy fleshing out your characters to make them realistic in a novella, especially since one of them is supernatural, and you also have that whole world-building thing needing to happen, but the author does a fantastic job sprinkling the info into the narrative without ever making it feel like info-dump. Greg bitches about higher insurance rates, and extra tinting on the car windows, and being taxed higher than mortals, and generally having to pay more for stuff, because of that whole undead thing, which is plenty to make this world feel real enough.

There's more to the book than just the sexy times, even if those are plenty. There's also doubt and confusion and fear, and the author did a great job exploring those feelings. As the story is told entirely from Greg's POV, we don't get a whole lot of insight into Zane, but what we get is enough to paint a picture of the guy - laid-back, a bit of a free spirit, definitely into weed and sex with Greg, but also insightful enough to realize that Greg needs to come to terms with what's bothering him, and then giving him the space and time to figure things out. Well done, that.

Recommended for all L.A. Witt fans, and those who love romance books that are sexy, light, and fluffy, but also have some serious undertones.

not sure how I feel about this one!
The Night Realm - Annette Marie
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book. I'm going to struggle with this review, because I'm not really sure I liked it. I KNOW I did not DISLIKE it, I just don't know if I did, if that makes any sense! Clio is exile on Earth, her brother Bastian visits and asked Clio to use her skill, her very UNIQUE skill to get them ahead in a possible war with their neighbours who plan to invade. Clio is a nymph who can see magic. She can replicate anything she sees, so a trip to the Underworld to see what spells they have for sale, should be a piece of cake, right? Lyre is the daemon tasked with her consultancy. Lyre is incubi, but he can see right through Clio without ever using his magic. But Lyre does not want to make the magic of war, he doesn't want to kill anyone. But Clio's life is in danger, however, his attitude changes, and no one is safe from his wrath. Like I said, gonna struggle! Its well written, from both Clio and Lyre's point of view, in the third person, past tense. I saw no spelling mistakes or possible editing errors. And I DID finish it, because it was touch and go for a while! Very detailed descriptions of the visual aspect of the magic here, got a bit too much is some places, though. It is a little violent in places, nothing too graphic, just needed mentioning. And although Lyre is incubi, it is, strangely, almost clean. But that's not for want of trying!

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this box set. Welcome aboard the LS Quantum, a star ship to rival all the star ships. 13 stories based on board and around the entertainers and the guests, finding love among the stars was never their plans, but who are they to mess with fate?? I mostly enjoyed these. One or two I didn't read, and there was no one that stood out as they usually do, for me anyway, in these box sets. Some authors I've not read before, and I find these box sets the best way to find new to me authors. We have humans and aliens, princes and rock stars, murders to solve and thieves to track. All the ones I read were well written, with no spelling or editing errors I spotted. Some are more explicit than others, and some carry are darker undertone. Some are a little more way sci-fi based and some are just two people falling in love on a space ship. A great box set, great value for the £2.95/$3.89 (Nov 8th 2017) is on sale for. 4 solid stars **same worded review will appear elsewhere**

awesome start to a new series!
Forged Alliances - Katherine McIntyre
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book. Sierra worked hard, fought hard to get her position of Alpha of Red Rock pack, so when Dax tells her why he needs her help, she can't say no. The fact that he is a cat to her wolf, and that the mating bond flares bright between them, she can't see his pack fractured they way it has been. Then the Tribe arrive to oversee the dispute, and Dax finds himself in a fight for his life. I read McIntyre's Philadelphia Coven Chronicles and I loved them but this one way surpasses those and there were two 5 star reads in that series!! Sierra is a true Alpha female and she has the support of her pack when she comes to Dax and his pack's aid. Dax is impressed, not only with her skill and wisdom as Alpha, but in Sierra, the woman. Their chemistry is hot and heavy and it burns brighter once the mating bond kicks in. It's sexy, it's bloody, it's full of kitty/dog jokes. With some laugh out loud moments, some OMG moments, some heart breaking moments and some bone breaking moments, this book was just what I needed!! It's extremely well written, from both Dax and Sierra's point of view. There is no massive info dump you sometimes get with first books in new series, and I love that. Makes it easy to keep up! A few secrets thrown in that I didn't see coming either. All in all, a super sexy, super needed 5 stars **same worded review will appear elsewhere**

a 4 star scorcher!
Temptation and Treachery (Dangerous Desi... Temptation and Treachery (Dangerous Desires) - Sahara Roberts
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book. Using the official blurb, cos whatever I write comes out all kinds of wrong! Andres “Rio” Rivera became his ICE profile years ago. Cold and calculating, he never promises anything beyond right now. But when he ends up with a cancelled flight and a shared hotel room with the secretive Celeste Patron, the fire behind Celeste’s buttoned-up exterior melts every barrier. He may only have her for one night, but that’s long enough to make her every fantasy come true. When Celeste leaves, Rio returns to hunting a notorious cartel leader. His shock upon arresting the man is eclipsed when he discovers the woman he fell for is his daughter…and she’s pregnant with Rio’s baby. I was thinking, before I started this book, I really need a down and dirty book. One with instant powerful attraction and a good deal of heat, maybe a scorcher, just to lose myself in. And boy did this deliver! Celeste's attraction to Rio is instant and extremely powerful. her alter ego Vix strongly approves of Celeste's choice! They get their down and dirty on early in the book, and once they get their wires uncrossed, and Celeste realizes that Rio is trying to keep her safe, they get it on again! Phew!! Other than the scorching heat level, the fact that Rio is after Celeste's father for Cartel crimes, and that he might not actually be responsible for those crimes, I figured really quickly who might really be. I did not think he would put Celeste's life in danger. Surprised at that bit! This is, from what I see, book 3 in the series. I did not know that before I went in, so I saw some future stories playing in my head as I read this one. But it appears all that plotting and planning was for nothing, since the pair I set up together, have their own, SEPARATE books! I would like to read them, especially if they are as hot as this one! A very well written, well needed.... 4 stars **same worded review will appear elsewhere**
