Snakes and Ladders Square 100: Pick my next read for me!

Man, choosing only four books for this square was hard. I debated choosing four from different completely unrelated books, or going with some sort of theme. I opted to go with a "Japanese novels in translation" theme, sticking to either standalone novels or the first books in series I haven't tried before. (I was going to set this up as a quiz like some of you have done but couldn't get it to work for some reason, so I'll be counting answers in comments instead. Sorry!)

1. Edge of Tomorrow by Hiroshi Sakurazaka (266 pages) - When the alien Mimics invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor called a Jacket and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to be reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On his 158th iteration, he gets a message from a mysterious ally - the female soldier known as the Full Metal Bitch. Is she the key to Keiji's escape or his final death?

2. Masquerade and the Nameless Women by Eiji Mikage (222 pages) - Since the death of her sister, police force newbie Yuri Uguisu has been chasing the notoriously untraceable serial killer Masquerade. When a new corpse turns up in Odaiba, Yuri immediately goes on alert—only to recognize the victim as an old classmate, the alluring and mysterious Reina Myoko. When the police force calls in long-time consultant psychologist Seiren Higano for assistance in untangling the testimonies of Reina’s father, fiancé, and lover, Yuri meets the riveting, charismatic psychologist for the first time. Little does she know that Higano is none other than Masquerade himself. Faced with Reina’s case, Higano promises to get the answers, but no one is prepared for the conclusion reached in the interrogation room…

In this cat-and-mouse tale of hunter and hunted, Eiji Mikage has woven a subtle and twisting tale of clashing motives and murky identities, where nothing anyone says can be taken at face value.

3. How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom, Vol. 1 by Dojyomaru (374 pages) - When Kazuya Souma is unexpectedly transported to another world, he knows the people expect a hero. But Souma's idea of heroism is more practical than most - he wants to rebuild the flagging economy of the new land he's found himself in! Betrothed to the princess and abruptly planted on the throne, this realist hero must gather talented people to help him get the country back on its feet - not through war, or adventure, but with administrative reform!

4. Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers, Vol. 1 by Ishio Yamagata (220 pages) - Seven heroes gather to save the world - but the legends spoke of only six.

Long ago, the Evil God was sealed at the edge of the continent, where it lies in slumber. Each time it awakens, it threatens to plunge the world into hell, and each time, six powerful warriors are chosen to seal it away again. But now, as the cycle begins anew, the Crest of the Six Flowers marks not six Braves...but seven.

Hans, the mysterious assassin for hire. Mora, the elder of the All Heavens Temple. Chamo, the young but deadly Saint of Swamps. Nashetania, the princess, and Goldof, the knight yearning to win her heart. Fremy, the girl with a dark past. And Adlet, the boy with a dream.

When the Braves of the Six Flowers realize one of their number is an impostor, hero will turn on hero in this exciting new series!

Snakes and Ladders: 16th turn, nearly done

Finished books reserved for later:

- It doesn't actually matter anymore. :-)

Books read for the game:

1. Square 1: Neanderthal Seeks Human - Penny Reid  [dice: 1+2]

2. Square 4: The Midnight Club - Christopher Pike doesn't fit square requirements [dice: 3]

3. Square 7: Suddenly Royal - Nichole Chase  [dice: 1+5]

4. Square 13: Patient Zero - Ray Porter,Jonathan Maberry  [dice: 5+5]

5. Square 23: Salvation of a Saint - Keigo Higashino,Alexander O. Smith  doesn't fit square requirements [dice: 2]

6. Square 5: The Queen of Ieflaria (Tales of Inthya #1) - Effie Calvin  + Coffee Boy - Austin Chant  [dice: 3+5]

7. Square 13: What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions - Randall Munroe  [dice: 3+3]

15. Square 95: Gaslighting: Recognize Manipulative and Emotionally Abusive People--and Break Free - Stephanie Moulton Sarkis  Does not fit square requirement [dice: 3]

16. On Square 98: The Raven Tower - Ann Leckie  [dice:

The requirement is: Title starts with any of the letters in LADDERS. I opted to read something that fulfills the requirement so that I'd be guaranteed to make it past the final snake. I read Ann Leckie's The Raven Tower, which fits the requirement if you ignore the initial article, which I've opted to do.

It doesn't even matter what I roll now, since it doesn't matter if you don't exactly hit 100. I'm going to roll anyway, just out of curiosity.

No ones. Maybe I'd have been safe if I had used The Keeper of Lost Causes as my book for square 98. Or maybe not. I'm happy with the option I went with.

I'm still deciding on four books for BL folks to choose from. You can expect my Square 100 post soon. :-)

RULES OF THE GAME:

Everyone starts on 1. There are two alternative ways to move forward.

1. Read a book that fits the description on the space number as listed below and you can roll two dice to move forward more quickly.

2. However, if you can't find a book to fit the square, don't worry about it. You can read any book, and roll one dice on random.org.  This is to ensure that if a reader cannot find a book to fill the square, no one gets bogged down and can't move on.

All books must be at least 200 pages long. Short stories count, so long as you read enough of them from a collection to equal 200 pages.

You do not need to hit space 100 with an exact roll. In order to win, you must complete space 100 as written.

ADDITIONS TO THE RULES

See comments to the post for further explanations or to ask questions

When you start on square 1, you need to read a book before you can roll. If your book fills the square, you get to roll two dice. If your book doesn't not fit the square, roll one dice only.

With respect to the ladder squares: You must read a book in order to climb the ladder. Once you finish the book for the ladder square, climb the ladder to the ending square. If you read a book that fits the ending square, roll two dice to move on, otherwise, roll one dice.

For audiobook substitutions, either check the print book to determine if it is more than 200 pages long, or any audiobook that is a minimum of 5 hours & 30 minutes qualifies.

Snakes and Ladders: 14th something-or-other

Finished books reserved for later:

- Dramacon Ultimate Edition - Svetlana Chmakova  (600+ pages - I'm not actually sure whether this counts for Snakes and Ladders, so I'm keeping it on reserve for now)

Books read for the game:

1. Square 1: Neanderthal Seeks Human - Penny Reid  [dice: 1+2]

2. Square 4: The Midnight Club - Christopher Pike doesn't fit square requirements [dice: 3]

3. Square 7: Suddenly Royal - Nichole Chase  [dice: 1+5]

4. Square 13: Patient Zero - Ray Porter,Jonathan Maberry  [dice: 5+5]

5. Square 23: Salvation of a Saint - Keigo Higashino,Alexander O. Smith  doesn't fit square requirements [dice: 2]

6. Square 5: The Queen of Ieflaria (Tales of Inthya #1) - Effie Calvin  + Coffee Boy - Austin Chant  [dice: 3+5]

7. Square 13: What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions - Randall Munroe  [dice: 3+3]

8. Square 19: On What Grounds - Cleo Coyle  doesn't fit square requirement [dice: 5]

9. Square 24: Monster - Christopher Pike  doesn't fit square requirement [dice: 4]

10. Square 28: Now You're One of Us - Mitsuko Volek,Michael Volek,Asa Nonami  [dice: 5+6]

11. Square 39: The Twelve Kingdoms: Sea of Wind - Fuyumi Ono,小野 不由美,Akihiro Yamada,山田 章博,Alexander O. Smith,Elye J. Alexander  [dice: 5+6]

12. Square 50: Murder Past Due - Miranda James  [dice: 5-3]

 13. Square 58: Chain Letter - Christopher Pike  + Slumber Party - Christopher Pike  [dice: 3+2]

14. On Square 63: The Viscount Who Loved Me - Julia Quinn  Up the ladder!

I'm really not sure I'm understanding the ladder squares correctly. However, I read a book that fit the requirement for Square 63 (the cover of The Viscount Who Loved Me is more than 50% blue). By my understanding, this gets me up the ladder. Instead of rolling again, Square 95 now applies.

And ugh, it's an awful one. The requirement: Memoir. I'm not a fan of memoirs, and the only one I have in my collection that I haven't already read is Cruising Attitude: Tales of Crashpads, Crew Drama, and Crazy Passengers at 35,000 Feet by Heather Poole. I got it as an ARC ages ago, attempted to read it, and eventually put it aside. I don't recall it being bad, but I wasn't in the mood then, and I'm not in the mood now. It's a huge risk, since all it would take is rolling a 4 to land on that last snake, but I think I'm going to go with a book that doesn't fit my current square.

Snakes and Ladders: 13th roll, not unlucky

Finished books reserved for later:

- Chain Letter - Christopher Pike  (185 pages - too short to count as a book)

- Dramacon Ultimate Edition - Svetlana Chmakova  (600+ pages - I'm not actually sure whether this counts for Snakes and Ladders, so I'm keeping it on reserve for now)

Books read for the game:

1. Square 1: Neanderthal Seeks Human - Penny Reid  [dice: 1+2]

13. On Square 58: Chain Letter - Christopher Pike  + Slumber Party - Christopher Pike  [dice: 3+2]

The requirement for this square: Was published more than 25 years ago. Both Chain Letter and Slumber Party fit. They were both a little too short to count as one book, so I'm using them together.

This puts me on Square 63. Oh wow, I lucked out. It's a LADDER.

The requirements for this square: Cover is more than 50% blue. I'll have to look through my books to see what appeals, but I should be able to find something pretty easily. If I understand the rules correctly, I have to read something that fits the requirements of Square 63 in order to climb the ladder, right?

Snakes and Ladders: 12th roll, working well with my ILL requests

Finished books reserved for later:

- Chain Letter - Christopher Pike  (185 pages - too short to count as a book)

- Dramacon Ultimate Edition - Svetlana Chmakova  (600+ pages - I'm not actually sure whether this counts for Snakes and Ladders, so I'm keeping it on reserve for now)

Books read for the game:

1. Square 1: Neanderthal Seeks Human - Penny Reid  [dice: 1+2]

2. Square 4: The Midnight Club - Christopher Pike doesn't fit square requirements [dice: 3]

3. Square 7: Suddenly Royal - Nichole Chase  [dice: 1+5]

4. Square 13: Patient Zero - Ray Porter,Jonathan Maberry  [dice: 5+5]

5. Square 23: Salvation of a Saint - Keigo Higashino,Alexander O. Smith  doesn't fit square requirements [dice: 2]

6. Square 5: The Queen of Ieflaria (Tales of Inthya #1) - Effie Calvin  + Coffee Boy - Austin Chant  [dice: 3+5]

7. Square 13: What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions - Randall Munroe  [dice: 3+3]

8. Square 19: On What Grounds - Cleo Coyle  doesn't fit square requirement [dice: 5]

9. Square 24: Monster - Christopher Pike  doesn't fit square requirement [dice: 4]

10. Square 28: Now You're One of Us - Mitsuko Volek,Michael Volek,Asa Nonami  [dice: 5+6]

11. Square 39: The Twelve Kingdoms: Sea of Wind - Fuyumi Ono,小野 不由美,Akihiro Yamada,山田 章博,Alexander O. Smith,Elye J. Alexander  [dice: 5+6]

12. On Square 50: Murder Past Due - Miranda James  [dice: 5-3]

The requirement for this square was for the book to have a domestic animal on the cover. Murder Past Due's Main Coon cat counts, even if he was occasionally mistaken for a bobcat or some other small wild animal. So I rolled two dice:

This puts me on Square 58. The requirements for this square: Was published more than 25 years ago. If my math is correct, that's anything published prior to 1994. I'm definitely set - I have an interlibrary loan copy of Christopher Pike's Slumber Party, published in 1985, that I need to read. It's slightly too short to count as a book, but I can combine it with one of the books I have on reserve, Pike's Chain Letter.
