In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex - Nathaniel Philbrick

5 stars.

I understand there's a movie coming out about this book, the timing of my reading it is completely coincidental. I actually pulled it off my shelf to read it Sept 1, but didn't start in earnest until the 22nd. I hope the movie is as conscientious about historical accuracy as the book tries to be and isn't a Hollywood horror movie.

The book is extremely readable for non-fiction based almost exclusively on 19th century documents. He has done amazing amounts of research and the notes in the end were almost more interesting to me than the content of the book itself. There is also an extensive Bibliography and an Index.

This is the form of historical non-fiction I would aspire to write

Stop The Diet, I Want To Get Off!
Stop the Diet, I Want to Get Off! - Lisa Tillinger Johansen

Cotton ball diet? Really?

There are lots of (crazy) fad diets out there and it's easy to get caught up in them when you want to shed those unwanted pounds, but the reality is that you have to eat right and exercise.

The author does a good job of listing healthy foods and portions and how many calories we can burn during certain activities. She gives us tips on how to start our journey as well as websites that may help.

It's a good book to have around the house.

The Bookshop Book - Jen Campbell

5 stars.

Makes me more determined, when I am well someday I want to fulfill the dream from my early 20s and own or work in a bookstore. I would also like to travel to all of these bookstores, particularly, for some reason, the ones in Wales tempt me.

The Fasting Girl: A True Victorian Medical Mystery - Michelle Stacey

Thank you so much, Jackie, for passing this along to me. It really is a must read for lovers of Victorian Era history. It also covers the beginning of modern sciences, phych studies, and anorexia. A well written and we'll laid out book covering a huge scope. Don't forget the clairvoyants as well!
