Good Resource
50 Hikes with Kids: Oregon and Washington - Wendy Gorton

A nice little book of hikes that one can take with young children (or even adults).  The book is very simple to understand, is well laid out, and the writing is good.  There are 32 hikes in Oregon, and 18 in Washington.  The hikes range in distance from one mile to three and a half miles.  They vary in difficulty from easy to challenging.  In addition to breaking down the hikes by region (NW, Central, Coastal, etc), the author goes much further. She lists hikes by features (lakes, waterfalls, history, flora, fauna, and on and on). And then again by season, as some of the hikes are better in the winter, others in the summer.  She has very good descriptions on how to select the particular hike based on the individual hikers profile. The maps are easily navigated, and the accompanying photos are helpful.  All in all, this is one of the better guide books I have found.  Well done!

Good Halloween Read
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Large Print Classics) - Washington Irving

A few years ago, I re-read this book with one of my girls for school. Yesterday, I reassigned the book as a one day read and discussion with the girls. I figured Halloween subjects should be fun. This was a fun read and we watched an old cartoon version of the story as well and discussed how it was similar or dissimilar to the story they read. It was a fun day and fun read for the day.

I Know It's a "Classic", But...
The legend of Sleepy Hollow - Washington Irving

I found this very disappointing and really struggled to keep going for all 47 pages.  For a short story, it was long-winded and overstuffed with huge descriptiveness but very little actual action.  And not in the least bit scary.  I'm probably the only person in the whole wide world who didn't like this one.  I appreciate that it's a classic, I respect the vocabulary and writing style of Washington Irving...  but I give this one a thumb's down.  Blah.

(Audiobook) The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Washington Irving

I've listened to this every year since I got it--four years now. Tom Mison is what makes this book for me. His narration is absolutely delightful.
