In Alissa Nutting’s novel Tampa, Celeste Price, a smoldering 26-year-old middle-school teacher in Florida, unrepentantly recounts her elaborate and sociopathically determined seduction of a 14-year-old student.

Celeste has chosen and lured the charmingly modest Jack Patrick into her web. Jack is enthralled and in awe of his eighth-grade teacher, and, most importantly, willing to accept Celeste’s terms for a secret relationship—car rides after dark, rendezvous at Jack’s house while his single father works the late shift, and body-slamming erotic encounters in Celeste’s empty classroom. In slaking her sexual thirst, Celeste Price is remorseless and deviously free of hesitation, a monstress of pure motivation. She deceives everyone, is close to no one, and cares little for anything but her pleasure.

Tampa is a sexually explicit, virtuosically satirical, American Psycho–esque rendering of a monstrously misplaced but undeterrable desire. Laced with black humor and crackling sexualized prose, Alissa Nutting’s Tampa is a grand, seriocomic examination of the want behind student / teacher affairs and a scorching literary debut.

For all intents and purposes this book is a one star. However, I am generously adding a half star and rounding up for reasons that I will explain further on. In general, this was me reading Tampa: First, let it be clear that this isn't a one star because I was horrified at the subject matter. After ...

1.0 ***Shuddering in horror***
Nope, this should be banned, it should be stricken from Amazon, it should have never made it past their filters. I do believe that Amazon content rules specifically bans child pornography and the depiction of children in erotic scenes... Yet, somehow it is okay for this author to depict an adult...

3.5 Wow, just wow.
I'm not sure how to feel upon finishing this book. It was well written, and I feel like the subject matter should definitely make me feel a little skeevy but I actually don't. I was able to be objective and take it for the work of fiction that it is. That's not saying that it's the book for everyone...
