DNF. I tried about 75 pages of this over the last week and it is not doing anything for me for the following reasons: 1. This is a slow-build of a novel at a time when I am not in the mood for a slow-paced, potentially over-written story. 2. Although the story is set in Penang and I have an i...

He touched the envelope on the table. ‘You mentioned that you worked as a researcher for the War Crimes Tribunal.’ ‘I wanted to ensure that those who were responsible were punished. I wanted to see that justice was done.’ ‘You think I am a fool? It was not all about justice.’ ‘It was the only way ...

Honestly, this is a difficult one for me to write about. I know it won't be some people's cup of tea - it's slow-paced, a little confusing at times, set in a first-person PoV, and isn't afraid of exposition. But I loved it. It was just a good read that I thoroughly enjoyed from cover to cover, esp...

Malaya, 1949. After studying law at Cambrige and time spent helping to prosecute Japanese war criminals, Yun Ling Teoh, herself the scarred lone survivor of a brutal Japanese wartime camp, seeks solace among the jungle fringed plantations of Northern Malaya where she grew up as a child. There she di...
Steeped in Science, Submersed in Story
This was an amazing story, drenched in beauty, but an incomplete beauty, full of sorrow, but a sorrow with many questions, with unresolved anger. It tells the story a history of the main character, as she looks back to WWII and the ensuing fight for Malaysia, between the British and communists, and...

Sigh. I read the first chapter of this book and it made me reflect on our community of reviewers, both online and professional, and not in a good way. Not only does this book seem to be universally lauded as "beautifully written," even by people who disliked it, but it was even long-listed for the B...

Lovely light read, very atmospheric. The descriptions of the Garden and the history of violence in Asia during and after the war well summarised. Only a little formulaic in describing every Japanese cliche known to the West. But that should not put you off reading this little gem.

Tatoos. Japanese gardens. Rape. Disease. POWs. Guerrillas. Honor. Forgiveness. Imperialism. You know when you are a museum and you see a great work of art, and you think _sure that's nice_ but you are ready to move on to the next piece? That was this book for me. It book has many interestin...
