I was lucky enough to receive a Reader's Copy of this novel, and glad that I didn't immediately dismiss it based on the cover and synopsis on the back. The author successfully weaves the historical plotline with the modern day story. The historical plotline is interesting and informative, and Eber...

For anyone who doesn’t know, I used to belong to the Mormon church. I was born into it (4th generation actually) and lived it until I was around 18 and then removed myself from church membership at 19. So, in a sense, I can identify with Ann Eliza and her apostasy from the church. I may have left...

There is enough in this book for two books. I would have loved following Ann Eliza's story alone. The other half of the book, set in modern times is less interesting and the ending falls a bit flat.

Overall I was not impressed. I relatively recently (this past summer) read Brady Udall's book The Lonely Polygamist and was startled to come upon this idea that we should feel sorry for the man who takes multiple wives; that somehow these men are victims of this situation and end up with more respo...

From the product description: “It is 1875, and Ann Eliza Young has recently separated from her powerful husband, Brigham Young, prophet and leader of the Mormon Church. Expelled and an outcast, Ann Eliza embarks on a crusade to end polygamy in the United States. A rich account of her family’s polyg...

I'll admit it: The 19th Wife caught my eye because it's about polygamy, a subject bound to arouse curiosity (as the characters themselves observe!). On that front, the book delivers. It comprises two narratives: one, the story of Ann Eliza Young, one of the many wives of Brigham Young and eventually...

I think I differ from most in liking this book a lot. I can understand why it would be controversial -it's there in the title. :)Why I loved this book. Well, first of all, we get a look at the origins of the Mormon faith that most people don't see, including, I believe, people in the church. My ...

This fascinating book intermingles two stories: a murder mystery, the killing of Jordan Scott's father by his 19th wife, Jordan's mother; and the escape of Brigham Young's 19th wife from his "compound" in 1870. Clippings and documents telling of the history of the Mormon Church are interspersed in...

I really wanted to read this book after seeing the movie. I gave it a lot of effort. I found the fact that it was 2 stories in one was hard to follow. It would jump from one story to another.I finally had to give up on finishing it.

Good book.I've noticed a few reviews that have panned the novel for religious reasons or because of differences over the intersection between fiction and nonfiction, but neither issue affected me. The foul language and the gay relationships in one of the plot lines didn't distract me either. I was s...
