This is a fast-paced and imaginative book that combines quantum mechanics, Egyptian mythology and sorcery, Lord Byron, clown sorcerers, body snatchers, cross dressers, millionaires, doppelgangers (called "ka" in the book), time travel and hints of illegal human medical experimentation . How can you ...

Without actually intending it to be any sort of theme, I've read a number of time-travel books this year, and enjoyed all of them. The Anubis Gates was the most recent, and I picked it up not knowing that it was a time-travel story; I simply wanted to read more Tim Powers, as I really liked the othe...

The Anubis Gates (1983) is a time travel fantasy novel by Tim Powers. It won the 1983 Philip K. Dick Award and 1984 Science Fiction Chronicle Award. Well where do I start. I remember first reading this in the early 1990's and like a few other people, I struggled somewhat with the first two chapter...

One of the better time travel novels I have read. The story is full of surprises, twists and turns and weird ideas. You are never sure where the author is leading you but its always pleasantly surprising. There are strange and interesting characters but most of them are not really fleshed out.

DARK SLEEPER is an interesting, fascinating book that creates a lush fantastic world inspired by Dickens, but so much darker and stranger. Recommended by Tim Powers and Suzanne Clarke -- and I can see why. I enjoyed the novel... partially because I've never seen anyone do Dickenesque fiction quit...

I was surprised to find a novel that was much more complicated and rich than I might have otherwise expected. I knew this was a time travel book, and I knew there would be magic in it. I didn't expect it to be forerunner of the steampunk movement or to be so literary. Mr. Powers put a lot of conside...

I was really excited to read this book but it ended up being kind of disappointing. The premise was interesting and I really enjoyed the first half of the book. Then it took a giant leap into absurdity in the second half, full of meandering, unnecessary subplots and nonsensical magic. I guess I expe...

I'm going to be a bad book club group leader and give up on this book in favor of reading the ending on Wikipedia. By the second half of the book, the plot had turned into a magical loosey goosey mush and I didn't really care what happened next. I think my life will go along just fine without draggi...

The way time being described in this book is reminiscent to Time & Again by Jack Finney, to me anyway. However, the story itself is vastly different. Fast paced, full of adventure and magic, in addition time hopping, this book was a very entertaining read.

Cross Charles Dickens with H.G. Wells add some Clive Barker and throw in Neil Gaiman's absurd nature and I think you'll have the basis for this book. Don't forget a little Egyptian mythology and a Punch and Judy show! Not only did the author manage to make that all work he also threw some poetry and...
