This ebook includes a biographical introduction, a short critical analysis of Oscar Wilde and a brief introduction to this work. Published in 1898 under the coded name C.3.3., The Ballad of Reading Gaol was an extended poem inspired by the hanging, in 1896, of a former Trooper of the Royal Horse Guards, one Charles Thomas Wooldridge, who had cut the throat of his wife. It wasn't until the seventh print run that it became known who had written the poem, though by then, even with Wilde's reputation in tatters, it made little odds given the popularity of the poem.
