Astonishing tone-perfect addition to the Sherlock mythos placing Holmes a little younger than canon, and with a teenage female protégé. Hard to believe the author's a Californian - she does an incredible job with the language, as well as historic and location-based details. Clever mysteries, enjoyab...
Ok, it took me a very long time to finish the book but I did enjoy it. I think the narration made it very hard to stay immersed in the story (stories). The narrator did a good job giving the key players their own, distinct voices but they were all slow and fairly monotone and I found myself drifting...
I’m wavering between 1 and 2 stars because I finished it and it was well written. I really wanted to like this. I read the reviews and while there were some clear issues a female Holmes sounded great. It was not. Mary "Sue" Russell is NOT. She has no flaws, no addictions, no mental issues, no shortc...
Ok, I got to page 60 and am calling it quits. The Watson bashing is already in full swing. There is a scene that was basically copied out of Pride and Prejudice. This is all wrong and too disturbing. I'm sorry, I am just not compatible with pastiche when it concerns my favourite characters.

Then I noticed that I was reading the "20th Anniversary Edition" and realised that I was catching ...

I WAS FIFTEEN when I first met Sherlock Holmes, fifteen years old with my nose in a book as I walked the Sussex Downs, and nearly stepped on him. So begins the first of Laurie King's Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes mysteries. I first read this book fifteen years ago, and enjoyed it enormously. It was...
