As usual, Say's lovely paintings are stronger than his story, but I did find this story stronger than his norm. I liked the way he combined a myth (the Crane Wife) with a contemporary child's experience of hearing the story -- more original than the standard "retelling" or "modernization" of a fairy...
A legend comes to life for a little boy. A gentle, quiet tale.
