It is the year 1152 and a beautiful woman of thirty, attended by only a small armed escort, is riding like the wind southwards through what is now France, leaving behind her crown, her two young daughters and a shattered marriage to Louis of France, who had been more like a monk than a king, and certainly not much of a lover. This woman is Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine, and her sole purpose now is to return to her vast duchy and marry the man she loves, Henry Plantagenet, a man destined for greatness as King of England. Theirs is a union founded on lust which will create a great empire stretching from the wilds of Scotland to the Pyrenees. It will also create the devil's brood of Plantagenets - including Richard Cour de Lion and King John - and the most notoriously vicious marriage in history. The Captive Queen is a novel on the grand scale, an epic subject for Alison Weir. It tells of the making of nations, and of passionate conflicts: between Henry II and Thomas Becket, his closest friend who is murdered in Canterbury Cathedral on his orders; between Eleanor and Henry's formidable mother Matilda; between father and sons, as Henry's children take up arms against him; and finally between Henry and Eleanor herself.

2.0 Captive Queen: A Novel of Eleanor of Aquitaine
Let's call this historical-ish.Eleanor of Aquitaine, who was amazeballs, was made boring as hell for more than half of the book. This intelligent, strong, feisty twice-queen apparently spent a lot of time being sex crazed and thinking of only (tedious) sex with whatever man she could get near. Her...

I looked forward to reading Alison Weir's story of Eleanor of Aquitaine and I was disappointed. I thought it more romance than history. From what I learned in history class Eleanor was a force to be reckoned with not a bed hopping harlot – a bit overstated. I am sure there are other historical novel...

A very solid 4 stars! This is the first book I've read by Weir, and I wouldn't hesitate to read more from her given her engaging writing style and depth of knowledge. Eleanor is an intriguing character and I found myself really liking her throughout the book. I saw in other reviews that some people w...

1.0 Captive Queen: A Novel of Eleanor of Aquitaine
Eleanor of Aquitaine was first married to King Louis of France, but he was more interested spending his time in prayers than with his wife. She’s not happy and extremely bored and when it’s suggested that Louis finds a new wife to get much needed male heir she’s not resisting. Then she meets young H...

The fact that Eleanor is portrayed as this sexually hungry woman was a huge turn off to me. Obviously, yes, she had 10 children in 14 years so she must have had sex often, but I don't want to read about that. I want a good, strong story that doesn't take place mostly in bedchambers. I was only about...
