Fifteen centuries ago, the Roman philosopher Boethius hit upon a fine idea to keep himself busy until his impending execution. He composed a book delineating the consolations of his specialty. The book didn't save his life, but it did become a classic. Alain De Botton's post-modern equivalent of On The Consolations of Philosophy has a pertness and wit not frequently evident in Boethius's original. The lively discussions of Epicurus, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche are hip without being flippant, intelligent without being obscure or pretentious.
