After narrowly surviving a car crash, Alice Never and her brother Thomas find themselves in a strange new world known as the Library. Desperate to locate their missing parents, they have no choice but to set forth and explore the Library's aisles.
For Thomas, this means linking up with a haphazard so-called magician named Carstairs who claims to have special powers. Soon, however, Thomas learns that Carstairs isn't quite who he says he is.
