The book's blurbs compare it to Bridget Jones' Diary, which was published the same year, and Girl's Guide is supposedly one of the progenitors of chicklit, but I don't see the resemblance to Bridget Jones, at all, other than it's from the point of view of a contemporary urban female dealing with lov...
I first encountered "The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing" via Selective Shorts on NPR, and loved it so much I had to get the book. It's the best thing in the collection, and still a favorite.
I'm between 4 & 5 stars, and putting this on my favorites shelf. I really really really liked it. But I'm not sure if I liked it 5 stars worth. The awesome thing about this book is, it is one you can come back to time and time again (which I plan to do). As a young girl, as a young adult, as an adult...
I loved this book. Probably more than I thought I would. The writing is like nothing I've encountered before and I love how fresh it is. I kind of felt like I was reading a movie, if that makes sense. Highly recommend this one as it's not the typical novel. Really good read.http://www.yourentertainm...
The blurb on the back of the book was terrible. This book is not dazzling or wickedly insightful, and it does not "capture in perfect pitch what it's like to be a young woman coming of age in America today" which probably isn't even possible anyway. But, if we take away all these grand ambitions, it...
This is another book I found for $.89 at the Goodwill. I didn't have any particular burning desire to read it. Actually, I didn't even know what it was about. However, I flipped it open and saw an Elizabeth Bishop poem on the first page, so I decided I'd splurge the dollar. The first story was great....
The first time I read it, I had the same preconceptions on what the story ought to be: A novel about a literary agent in Manhattan trying and failing to find love, peppered with witticisms and ultra-hip whining, drinking of cosmopolitans, et cetera. I actually became a little annoyed when I found ou...
A really stupid book that was all about girls trying to find husbands. Without any of the cleverness and insight of Jane Austen to remediate that fact. It was not among the worst books of all time, but still I can't believe my sister liked it. I considered it vapid, insulting, and with no redeemi...
This was very cute. At first, I'd marked it down as just another chick lit novel and doubted I'd be able to get through all of it, but Banks has created some wonderful characters and provided enough variety for entertainment.
