DNF @ 20%. This book and I didn't get off to a great start, and I admit that some of this was due to my own preconceptions. But, I gave it a try. It just didn't work. When at 16% I still felt like it just was not getting any better. The writing style was just aggravating me. I should have...

I wasn't sure what to expect other than everyone raves about this author and I had to sit with it all a while to decide what I really felt about it. It's a powerful book and a little hard to read sometimes but also strangely beautiful. Trigger: death of a child. It's right in the first chapter that ...

Immersive. Like the Meenachal river that connects the Heart of Darkness to the Ayemenem house. Claiming lives, breaking bodies, silent, quiet and deadly. Unfathomable depths fractured through the eyes of children scarred forever. A narrative to match. And still, stark beauty.

I hate that GR won't let you NOT choose one of the radio buttons. I haven't read this book and I've added it to remind me NOT to read it. I just can't read stuff about sexual abuse any more. I'm sure it's a very valuable book in its way and many people love it, but it's not for me.

This novel centered upon twins, the boy Estha and the girl Rahel, during a crucial time when they're seven-years-old in 1969 and when they're reunited 24 years later. I found many of the cultural details depicting modern India intriguing: the complex interplay between religion, politics, region, eth...

Ironically enough, the fact that I'm an Indian - half-Malayali, actually, which means I know the state this book takes place in, Kerala, very well - that prevented me from loving it. First and foremost, it should be noted that this book is SLOW. I wasn't able to get into it until the last quarter, p...

I read this book quite some time ago, so I have no idea how coherent this review will be, but do bear with me.. Besides its close to impossible to review this book because I don't want to give any hints and don't even want to allude to what happens in it. These are just some of my thoughts regarding...
