A worthy successor to the first in the series. Capably juggles three possible heroes, all with significant anti-hero qualities: sarcastic Bartimaeus, ruthlessly ambitious Nathaniel and terrorist/freedom-fighter Kitty. Good action, some pretty scary bits with skeletons that I'd keep away from the kid...

Pages: 562. Genre: YA Fantasy. First Sentence: "At dusk, the enemy lit their campfires one by one, in greater profusion than on any night before." While I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem's Eye did not live up to my expectations. Nathaniel is 14, and is going through an awkward stage in his life. This teenage angst combined with the fact that he has lost sight of his morals while moving up in...

I had hoped that this would be as good as the first book but it was better. Golems eye adds in some of Bartimaeus' past, visits Prague (having visited I was amused at the difference between "our" Prague and Nathaniel's Prague), has golems, posessed skeletons and more of Kitty.

The first third of this book was a little slow. At first I wished I was reading the book instead of listening to it because I wanted to fast-forward through the Kitty sections. Once the story picked up, we got really into it. The Kitty storyline eventually grew on me and by the third book in the ser...

The only thing I was a little disappointed with this one was that Bartimaeus was less involved than in the first. On the other hand, we got to learn more about Kitty & Co, which was a good thing.

This book, like the first one, was very so-so for me. It had good points--Barty was annoying but entertaining, and again, the plot was good. It was also the first time I ever read about the Rosetta Stone kicking the bucket, which was cool. I liked the fact that Barty shapeshifted and worked magic mo...
