AudiobookI had to come to terms with the fact that this book is about a woman with problems and the people around her. There's no big mystery, really no big A-Ha! moment, although there is a coming to terms at the end. For a moment I thought there was going to a murder, but it was all my imagination...

I have conflicting feelings about this book. On the one had I think it is a brilliantly written book that perfectly portrays the life (and thoughts) of a 'functioning' alcoholic. On the other had I hated Hidly. So much. I think that may stem from personal feelings about an alcoholic in my own family...

Hildy is a tough character. On the one hand, she is witty and talented. She is caring, knowledgeable and not afraid of hard work. When she is sober, she is an admirable lady that one would be proud to have as a mother or friend. Unfortunately, it is her neediness that is painful to witness because s...

I selected this novel as part of a effort to look for books that may be of interest to a book group focused on "Boomer Generation" themes. This book qualifies because its heroine named Hildy is a 60-year-old divorcee who is a long time resident of a fictional town on Boston's North Shore. She has be...

We listened to this aloud in the office, and spent a lot of time saying, "For God's Sake, Hildy, put down the bottle!" She never listened. But we loved her anyway. This is probably a great beach read, though Mary Beth Hurt is a lively narrator if you just feel like listening.

This was not quite what I was expecting, though I'm not sure what that was. It was good, though. I don't usually care for books/movies that deal with alcoholism in this way. (The constant falls back into drinking.) This, though, allowed me to really connect with Hildy. I thought it was really well h...

Jodi Picoult and I do not see eye to eye on books. I bought this book last weekend because I had read several good reviews here, but didn’t really look at the cover until my boyfriend was parking the car in front of his building. I pulled the book out of the bag, glanced at the back cover, and said,...

I thought that this novel by Ann Leary showed great promise at the beginning but ultimately in the end still had some issues that need to be tightened up a bit.We have the main protagonist of this novel, Hildy Good, who was born and raised in a small town near Boston. Hildy we find is a recovering a...
